507. The New Wasteland!
507. The New Wasteland!
When Alex set foot on the wasteland world once again, his mood was entirely different.
Since the last time he destroyed the Red Skull's regime and overthrew Hydra's over 40-year rule on this planet, Alex had left the wasteland with the heroes.
Even after solving the problems with the Apocalyptic War Universe and the Wasteland Universe, Alex never returned to this land.
At that time, he had just become the maintainer of the space-time order and not only had to personally stay at the House of Mystery but also needed to stabilize the magical energy in his body, leaving him no time to pay attention to the wasteland's situation.
Then, after encountering the Watchers and receiving messages from the Zombie Mr. Fantastic, Alex's vacation was once again shattered.
Reluctantly, he had to set off again, traveling to other universes to deal with various problems and searching for clues to resolve the pollution's source.
On the surface, as the true master of the Wasteland Universe, Alex hadn't done anything except grant the people of this world their freedom. He hadn't even directed his attention here.
But only Alex knew that it wasn't that he didn't want to care, it was that he simply couldn't.
Having lived two lives, Alex possessed wisdom beyond ordinary people, but that didn't mean he understood everything. For example, he still knew nothing about basic technology.
It could be said that subjects like physics and chemistry truly depend on talent. Some people can easily grasp them, but others, no matter how hard they try, can never understand.
It's often said that managing a great country is like cooking a delicious dish, but Alex knew full well that he wasn't that great a chef. If the wasteland were to regain vitality, it had to be left to someone capable to govern.
Returning to this world, which was both familiar and strange, Alex felt a bit out of place.
Though he had occasionally observed the reconstruction of the wasteland from the House of Mystery, at that time, the reconstruction plan had only just begun. Everything was still in the blueprint stage and had not yet been implemented.
The old wasteland had been filled with barbarism and chaos. The loss of order and the rise of the law of the jungle meant that everyone living here was in constant danger.
No one knew which would come first: tomorrow or an unexpected disaster, and no one could guarantee their safety in this world.
Regime changes and the indulgence of supervillains had led to a break in civilization. As morality plummeted, the terrifying scenes that followed were unbearable for Alex, who had been accustomed to peace.
But now, looking at the newly paved asphalt roads and the surrounding skyscrapers, Alex felt a strange sense of something new in his heart.
Beside Alex, Pietro crossed his arms and smiled. "So, surprised? When I first arrived here, I couldn't believe it either. The New Babylon from back then has been transformed into this. It's even more prosperous than New York."
"This used to be New York," Ashley reminded him.
The changes here were absolutely massive. This place, which had once been nearly all ruins, with roads in disrepair and garbage scattered everywhere without anyone to clean it, had now been thoroughly transformed. Numerous Doombots were patrolling the streets, and in the distance, huge mechanical devices were transporting building materials to higher floors.
Noticing Alex's gaze, Kara explained, "After Doctor Doom died, his country and people were merged into here, and the Doombots he created were reprogrammed by Mr. Fantastic. Now, they're used for community reconstruction."
Alex, curious, asked, "Doombots? Didn't Doom have full control over them? Aren't you worried these machines might start a war against life again?"
"With the Overseers around, that won't happen. Besides, now the Doombots are under the control of Ashley's godfather," Pietro explained.
"Godfather? That's so rude. Please call him Ultron 8, thank you!" Ashley said angrily, kicking Pietro.
Ignoring the playful quarrel between Pietro and Ashley, Alex refocused his attention on the Doombots.
It was hard to imagine that these robots, created for war, were now maintaining social order so methodically, and they were even controlled by the same Ultron robots that had once started the Age of Ultron.
Interestingly, the appearance of the Doombots had not changed. They still wore green robes, just like Doctor Doom did.
"If Doom could see this scene, I think he'd finally feel at ease," Alex said thoughtfully.
"Yeah, who would've thought? The one who dared to stand at Earth's first line of defense against the Universal Church of Truth would turn out to be one of the villains who once sought to destroy the world," Kara said, shaking her head. "Everyone saw what happened, and Mr. Fantastic didn't hide anything. He told the public the truth. No matter what Doom was before, at least he died as a hero, sacrificing himself."
The group continued walking, and before long, they saw an enormous statue standing in the center of the city.
It wasn't an individual statue, but a grand stone sculpture made up of many people, depicting all the heroes who had resisted the supervillains.
Not only were there Punisher, two generations of Hawkeye, Star-Lord, and Wolverine Logan, but even the entire Justice League was there, including Superman, Cyborg and Batman.
At the very top of the statue, there was a figure holding an umbrella.
"That... could it be me?" Alex looked up at the faceless statue, his lips twitching. "Why is my face blocked by the umbrella?"
"This is for a sense of mystery," Pietro chuckled.
"Are you sure?" Alex raised an eyebrow. "I feel the flow of magic. Did you carve something else on my statue?"
"Couldn't hide it from you," Kara replied. "When this statue was being designed, Agatha found us and said she owed you a favor. Now, she wants to repay you in a special way, so she carved a magical array into this statue."
Kara raised her hand and pointed to the large umbrella at the top.
"Because of the magical array, the angle and material of the statue were altered, which is why your face is blocked."
"Interesting," Alex curiously observed the magical flow on the umbrella. Although he didn't know the specifics, just from the magic radiating from it, he could tell it was no ordinary magic array.
"Doctor Doom previously used magic and technology to restart the protective magic of the three Supreme Temples, and Agatha used a special method to channel those magic circuits here," Kara explained. "If a similar danger occurs again, this statue will gather the energy of the entire Earth, open the magical barrier again, and protect the planet."
"Impressive, didn't expect Agatha to take the initiative like this. I thought she'd hide away for the rest of her life," Alex smiled.
He had only met Agatha once, during his search for the Darkhold. At that time, Agatha had been controlled by Baron Mordo, and it was Alex who had saved her from the mind control.
Not only that, but Agatha had also helped Alex modify the Eye of the Watcher, turning it into the form of a raven. So, the favor she mentioned had already been repaid long ago, and this time, it was probably her way of showing goodwill.
The Overseers' transformation of the wasteland was something no one could stop, and it was clear Agatha understood this. If she wanted to continue living on this planet, she would have to interact with the Overseers.
Rather than being chased around by Superman, ultimately getting beaten up by Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman and driven off Earth, it was better to take the initiative and show goodwill.
Looking at the thriving city, Alex's mood improved considerably, but he noticed that most of the people on the street had Asian features, making him feel as if he had arrived in Chinatown.
"When did so many Asians come here?" Alex asked curiously.
Hearing Alex's question, Kara explained, "After Luthor unified the European and American continents, he immediately established contact with the Asian continent. Unlike here, even though both continents were occupied by supervillains, the population there actually grew instead of shrinking.
At first, they just wanted to bring back the people who had been randomly teleported here, but later, in order to supplement the local population and labor force, Luthor opened the channels and brought a large number of Asians here.
Now, there are no national restrictions on Earth anymore; the entire planet is one united entity."
"That's quite nice," Alex nodded seriously. There's nothing better than seeing people unite.
"Perhaps it's the multiple crises that made people realize the value of life. Now, aside from a few inherently evil people, most have found their morals and goodness again."
As she said this, Kara remembered something interesting and continued.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
"By the way, Alex, do you know Thanos?"
"Thanos? What happened to him?" Alex was well aware of this finger-snap god and population manager, but he was curious about why Kara also knew about this existence. "Don't tell me he's come to Earth too."
"Well, there was a burst of solar radiation in the universe, and a few days later, our satellites detected a spaceship landing in the Rocky mountains. The people inside were none other than Thanos."
"Thanos isn't someone to mess with. If you really think about it, he could even compete with Clark. But I remember he should've retired by now," Alex recalled the storyline of the wasteland.
"Yeah, he retired. Due to the radiation, the area where he lived was affected. I heard that since Earth is rebuilding, he's planning to come here and retire," Kara explained.
"What happened after that? Did you guys have any conflicts?" Alex asked.
Though a conflict wouldn't be a big deal, given Earth's current combat strength, Thanos wouldn't be able to stir up much trouble.
However, what Kara said next left Alex stunned.
"There wasn't any conflict. When we got there, Thanos was with a group of people planting crops. Apparently, he was found by a few locals, and after that, he settled in their village. Now, he's a well-known food magnate."
Pietro, worried that Alex might not believe it, added, "I saw it with my own eyes. Thanos drives a tractor like a pro."
