510. The Shameless Old Wolf.
510. The Shameless Old Wolf.
Looking at the report from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, Luthor's face was filled with worry.
"Here they come again, asking for money, asking for resources... who can go deal with that old wolf over there!"
The report started with praise and respect for Luthor as a great leader, exaggerating the changes in the wasteland after his rise to power, as well as the fact that people were living in peace and prosperity.
Luthor knew very well that with that old wolf's brain, there was absolutely no way he could have written this. It was probably Emma Frost, the White Queen, who did the writing for him. Otherwise, Logan's reports would never have been so polite.
"Is this the report from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters?" Madame Masque was already used to it.
Since the school's establishment, that old bastard Wolverine had been using all sorts of methods to ask for money and supplies.
At first, thinking that they were all superheroes and knowing that Luthor was new to this place, he had wanted to build a good relationship with the local heroes. So, he had accepted all of Logan's requests without question.
But what he didn't expect was that Logan had finally found a big spender. During every holiday and festival, he would show up at the League's headquarters, causing a scene to scrounge for resources.
Luthor had thought that Logan, having aged from an old man back to a middle-aged man, would have become a bit more settled in his personality. But who could have predicted that this guy had no sense of shame at all? If he didn't get resources, he would make it clear he wasn't leaving until he did.
Luthor, who was already busy enough, certainly couldn't allow Logan to make trouble for him. So every time this situation arose, he had no choice but to take something out to coax Logan into leaving.
Sometimes it was a truckload of food, other times it was clothes, or even old books and newspapers. Anything that could help the students, Logan wanted it all.
And every time he left, it was like he had won a victory, which left Luthor gritting his teeth in frustration.
Helpless, Luthor specifically called both Hawkeyes, the second generation. As old Avengers, Luthor thought they should have a way to deal with Logan. He couldn't keep letting Logan take advantage of him.
Clint Barton's solution was to send Logan on a mission, in simple terms—just get him out of the way. As long as Logan had something to do, he wouldn't come causing trouble, and with Emma Frost at the school, there wouldn't be any issues.
Luthor, upon hearing this, didn't hesitate and immediately assigned Logan a mission to go to Siberia and resolve the issues caused by the White Rabbit and the Walrus.
The White Rabbit and Walrus had once been villains in New York, but after Red Skull took over, he drove out these "lesser" criminals. So, the White Rabbit and Walrus, along with their followers, went to Siberia.
Due to their influence in the deep mountains and snowfields, they rarely appeared, so almost everyone had forgotten about them.
When Batwing arranged for supplies to be transported to Siberia, they were directly ambushed by these two, who called themselves the "Terrible Two." Not only did they rob the supplies, but they also injured many soldiers.
Seizing this opportunity, Luthor hurriedly sent Logan there. After all, they were just two low-level villains, and being so old, they wouldn't cause much trouble. Plus, it would get Logan off his back for a while—a win-win.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
But Luthor didn't expect that when Logan got there, instead of fighting them, he sat down and started reminiscing about the past.
It turned out that the White Rabbit and Walrus had long since retired to the mountains, and the small village they had established was entirely self-sufficient. If it hadn't been for an avalanche burying half of their village, they wouldn't have risked returning to their old ways.
At first, they had thought they were robbing Red Skull's supply convoy, so they didn't kill anyone but simply took the supplies and let everyone go.
When they saw the unchanged Logan come to visit, they were immediately scared out of their wits and tried to run. But how could they escape from Logan? In just a few moves, he had them on the ground.
After learning about their situation, Wolverine Logan immediately contacted the team in Siberia to make proper arrangements for the White Rabbit and Walrus. He even sent people to rescue the injured villagers and recover resources.
Once all this was done, Logan happily returned to the school.
What, you ask where the stolen supplies went?
Of course, they were all brought back to the school by Logan.
When Luthor saw the action report, his face turned black. Who in their right mind gives military rations to students!?
To make matters worse, he also provided them with military blankets. What's worse, Logan had taken the weapons and equipment too. Was he planning to declare independence!?
In the end, it was Emma Frost, the White Queen, who stepped in, returned the weapons and equipment, and personally came to apologize at the League's headquarters. Her good attitude kept Luthor from getting too angry, and the matter was settled quickly.
Afterward, the point of contact between Xavier's School and the League's headquarters was changed from Logan to Emma. But that old wolf didn't change his ways and kept trying to find ways to ask for resources.
Adjusting his glasses with a sigh, Luthor muttered.
"I really give up. There's no one else who does things like this. Back when I was a criminal, I wasn't this brazen. This guy treats our place like a convenience store!"
"Everything has a first time, and Logan is doing all of this for the kids," Madame Masque said nonchalantly.
Hearing this, Luthor became irritated and immediately spoke up.
"For the kids, for the kids… who doesn't have kids? There are so many children in the world, and I don't have many resources to begin with. What do you want me to do?"
Madame Masque, seeing his reaction, quickly changed the topic. "So what are they asking for this time?"
"This time..." Luthor picked up the report again. He had reacted impulsively before and hadn't finished reading it.
When he saw the next part, his expression immediately became strange.
"They... invited me to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters to give a public lecture and asked me to take a position as a professor there."
"Oh?" Madame Masque blinked in surprise.
Looking silently at the praise directed toward him in the report, Luthor couldn't help but smile. He hadn't expected this—this old wolf had actually changed his tune.
Giving a lecture and taking on a professorship? If it had been in the past, Luthor wouldn't have cared. With his position in Metropolis, getting a professor title at that school would be a piece of cake.
But now things were different. Xavier's School wasn't just any school—it was a special institution built for mutants. The students here were all future candidates for the X-Men.
If he could take a position there, his future plans would be much easier to carry out, wouldn't they?
Thinking of this, Luthor couldn't help but smile.
"Not bad, not bad. That guy finally did something good."
"Are you sure it's a good thing?" Madame Masque tilted her head, looking curious.
"Why wouldn't it be a good thing? The League hasn't yet established laws regarding mutants, only those for the superpowered. With mutants increasing, we'll definitely need to set up proper laws in the future."
Luthor continued earnestly, "In this case, if we can pull the mutant force onto our side early, we'll be able to have better cooperation in the future."
"But... if you take that professorship, wouldn't it make it easier for that old wolf to ask you for resources?" Madame Masque pointed out.
In an instant, Luthor's smile froze on his face.
Good grief.
He had been so busy earlier that he hadn't noticed this issue.
Now, seeing it pointed out by the observant Madame Masque, Luthor immediately broke out in a cold sweat.
In just a few seconds, he could already imagine a group of kids surrounding him, shouting, "Professor, we're hungry!"
"No!"
Luthor threw the report onto the table, retreating repeatedly as if the report was infected with some kind of virus.
"No, no, no, no!"
Just as Luthor was panicking and didn't know what to do, suddenly, the phone on his desk rang, interrupting his thoughts.
He paused for a moment, helplessly shook his head, and walked over to answer the phone.
"Hello, this is Luthor."
A pleasant voice came from the other end of the line, and Luthor nodded.
"Yes, let them come up."
Hanging up the phone, Luthor glanced around and then carefully tidied up the scattered reports and documents on his desk.
Then, he quickly walked to a mirror in the room and started adjusting his appearance, making sure his tie and cuffs were as neat as possible.
Seeing Luthor's sudden change after the phone call, Madame Masque couldn't help but be curious.
"Who's coming over that makes you so serious?"
At this, Luthor turned around. "This person is a big deal. If it weren't for him, I might have been dead a long time ago and wouldn't be in this position. By the way, can you check how I look?"
"You look very neat, no need to adjust anything," Madame Masque replied, but from Luthor's words, she quickly guessed the visitor's identity.
Although she hadn't seen the person in question, the legend of the "Death Crow" had spread across the wasteland. People's reverence for him had reached extraordinary levels, and even ravens had become a symbol of the Earth.
At first, Madame Masque wasn't too nervous, but seeing how serious Luthor was, she couldn't help but take out a handkerchief from her pocket to wipe her mask.
A few moments later, the office door was gently opened.
Then, under Kara's lead, Alex and Pietro walked in.
Luthor was already very familiar with Kara and Pietro, as they had often worked together on the reconstruction of the wasteland. From the moment the three entered, Luthor's gaze was fixed firmly on Alex.
"It's been a long time, Mr. Death Crow."
