CHAPTER 521
By the time dessert was served, they had laid the foundations of their partnership, but the final decisions and terms were yet to be agreed upon.
Regardless, Sun Yichen was pleased with the progress, given Kai Group's hesitation over the past few weeks.
"I'll await your call regarding the next steps," he said, addressing Kai Beifang and Fang Mei.
"Definitely," Kai Beifang assured.
Suddenly, Sun Yichen felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He took it out to check on the caller, his eyes narrowing at the ID.
'Yu An.'
Lifting his eyes, he excused himself briefly. "Please, I would like to make use of the restroom."
"Yes, Tai," Fang Mei called out to one of the maids present. "Please show him to the restroom."
"Yes, madam."
Sun Yichen stepped away from the dining room and entered an ornate hallway, following the maid to the nearest restroom.
Once inside, he decided to take a moment to check his phone. As he glanced at the screen, he noticed an incoming call from Yu An.
He hadn't expected her to call during the dinner, especially given the delicate situation.
Curious as to what her reasons were, he answered the call, though he kept his voice low to avoid being overheard.
"Hey sugar," her sultry voice seeped out.
Sun Yichen gulped. She was out playing with fire.
"Yu An, this isn't the best time. I'm in the middle of an important dinner."
"So…?"
He shook his head. He did not want to lose her now, but he needed to keep his head straight with the Kais.
"Can I call you back later?" He tried to keep his tone polite, hoping she'd understand the situation.
On the other end of the line, Yu An's voice became more flirtatious and sultrier as she responded, "But Yichen, I've missed you so much. I couldn't wait any longer." She added a playful giggle to her words.
Sun Yichen sighed inwardly. She was persistent.
"I promise, I'll make it up to you," he said, trying to reassure her. "Just give me a little time, alright?"
Reluctantly, Yu An agreed. "Fine, but don't forget about me," she added, blowing him a kiss through the phone before hanging up.
"Heavens save me," he breathed out and tucked his phone back into his pocket.
Not wanting to seem suspicious, he turned on the tap head of the sink for a few seconds and rinsed his hands before turning it off.
Taking out a white handkerchief, he wiped his hands and proceeded to exit the restroom, only to be met with an unexpected sight.
"It took you long enough to take a leak," the challenging voice of a young boy stated.
There, standing in the dimly lit hallway, was Kai Chen, Fang Daiyu's younger brother, who had a distinct scowl on his face.
The kid's presence had taken Sun Yichen by surprise, and he tried to maintain his composure, failing to look as composed as he wished.
With an unspoken tension hanging in the air, Kai Chen finally broke the silence. "You do not love my sister," he stated bluntly, his young face unusually stern.
Those were the last words he'd expect the five- or six-year-old Kai Chen to utter.
Sun Yichen stammered for a moment under Kai Chen's intense gaze, his mind racing for the right words.
Finally, when he spoke, he tried deterring the young boy's mind. "What are you doing here?" he asked, but Kai Chen remained resolute.
"You do not love my sister."
"Hmm." At this point, he knew it would be a miracle to try to break away from the small soldier in front of him.
"Sun Yichen, you do not love my sister." This time, his tone was rude and laced with anger.
Sun Yichen raised an eyebrow in response, choosing his words carefully lest he got riled up by a child. "Kai Chen, what makes you say that? I care for your sister a great deal."
Kai Chen's expression hardened. "I may be young, but I'm not naive. My sister deserves someone who truly cares for her, not just a plaything."
"And why would you say such a thing?"
Kai Chen narrowed his gaze at him. "Brown-haired, beautiful woman, kissing intently at a corner on your engagement day. Does that ring a bell, Mr. Sun?" he asked, adjusting his glasses before folding his hand like a college professor.
His face was ashen with shock. Never in his wildest dream.
Sun Yichen face-palmed inwardly, watching Kai Chen smirk at him, looking like an animated little devil suited up with red horns on the shoulder of the character.
He never expected anyone to have seen them.
What was worse was the fact that it was his fiancé's younger brother who caught them. And who knows just who a child's lips had spilt details to?
"I will assume you do know what I speak of. Do you love my sister? Are you serious about her?"
Sun Yichen looked away. It was something getting caught by a kid. "Kai Chen, I care for her, but... it's not that simple. Relationships are complicated."
"Still. How dare you disrespect her?"
Sun Yichen inhaled deeply, holding back his anger. Had Kai Chen been an adult, he'd have gotten the hard end of the stick, but he was dealing with a kid.
"One question, little one. Does your sister love me?"
Kai Chen opened his mouth to speak but suddenly fell silent. He wasn't expecting such a challenging response and stuttered.
"Y-yes. I believe so. Hmph!"
Sun Yichen chuckled at his dismissal. He knew he was going to be a formidable man in the future.
"Look," he began, placing a hand in his pocket as he stepped closer, towering over the boy. "We both have our own lives, our own paths to follow."
Kai Chen nodded, his stance softening just a bit. "I-I… I get that, but you should be honest with her. If you're not in it for the long run, don't play with her feelings."
Sun Yichen swallowed hard; his throat suddenly dried. "I'll think about it. Thanks for the advice."
