Era of Players: Death God

Chapter 176: Dungeons 2

A sudden shift in Professor Elena's tone brought the class back from their imaginings of monstrous high-level dungeons.

"Now," she began, a hint of amusement in her voice, "let's transition from theory to practice. Some friendly competition, perhaps?"

A collective gasp rippled through the group. Noah's eyes gleamed with a competitive fire, while Lilith straightened in her seat, her mind already calculating strategies.

Professor Elena held up a hand, silencing the excited murmurs. "As you all know," she explained, "inter-class competition fosters a healthy spirit of rivalry and hones your skills in a practical setting. Therefore, I'm pleased to announce the upcoming Dungeon Delve Challenge!"

A cheer erupted from the students, their excitement palpable. She smiled, her eyes twinkling. "The premise is simple," she continued, raising her voice to be heard over the cheering. "Each class will select five representatives to delve into a designated low-level dungeon. The students who completes the dungeon and returns to the surface in the fastest time will be declared the victor."

A low rumble of conversation filled the air as students discussed tactics and speculated about which dungeon they would be assigned. Professor Elena held up a hand for silence once more.

"The chosen dungeon," she explained, "will be the Desolation Pits, a twelve-floor dungeon known for its simple layout but challenging traps. Remember, speed isn't everything. Careful navigation, strategic use of your skills, and perhaps a touch of teamwork within your class will be paramount to success."

A mischievous glint entered her eyes.

"There may even be a hidden bonus objective within the Desolation Pits, waiting to be discovered by the most astute adventurer." This last statement sent a wave of excitement through the class. The prospect of a hidden challenge within a seemingly straightforward dungeon added a layer of intrigue and motivated them to think beyond just raw speed.

A thrill of anticipation crackled through the class as Professor Elena's words hung in the air. While the prospect of a twelve-floor Desolation Pits loomed large, the immediate challenge was closer at hand.

"Alright then," Professor Elena said, her voice carrying a hint of amusement, "let's put this theoretical knowledge to the test. Before we choose our representatives for the Desolation Pits, each class will participate in a preliminary challenge."

Murmurs of excitement rose once more, punctuated by curious whispers. Noah, his competitive spirit ignited, leaned forward, eagerness etched on his face. Lilith, on the other hand, remained composed, her gaze focused on the professor, waiting for the details to unfold.

Professor Elena raised a hand, silencing the growing chatter.

"The challenge," she explained, "is a five-floor, artificially constructed dungeon. This miniature labyrinth, designed specifically for this purpose, will showcase various traps and puzzles commonly found in low-level dungeons."

She smiled, a hint of a challenge in her eyes.

"This test will determine the five students who will represent our class in the Desolation Pits competition. Speed and skill are important, of course, but remember, teamwork and resourcefulness can make all the difference." Exclusive content from m,v lem|p,yr

Suddenly, a holographic display flickered to life in the center of the clearing. It depicted a complex diagram, a blueprint of the five-floor artificial dungeon. Mazes of twisting corridors interlaced with chambers marked with cryptic symbols hinted at the challenges that awaited them.

"This is the layout of the training dungeon," Professor Elena explained, gesturing towards the hologram. "Each class will be given a time limit to complete it. The fastest team, with all five members reaching the final floor and activating the completion rune, will be declared victorious."

An excited buzz filled the air as the students studied the holographic map, mentally strategizing their route. Noah glanced at Lilith, a mischievous glint in his eye. Here was the opportunity to not only showcase his skills, but perhaps work alongside her in the challenge.

The air crackled with anticipation. The theoretical lessons on dungeons had been replaced by the thrill of competition and the promise of a taste of the real thing. This preliminary challenge was an opportunity to prove themselves, not just to their professor but to each other.

The race to conquer the miniature dungeon had begun, and with it, the first chance to shine and secure their place in the upcoming Desolation Pits competition.

Professor Elena, her stride purposeful, led the class deeper into the Ancientwood. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor as they approached a clearing. In the center stood a structure that seemed to rise organically from the ground itself. Walls, intricately carved from moss-covered stone, blended seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

A heavy, iron-wrought door, its surface etched with arcane sigils, marked the entrance to the artificially-made dungeon.

As Professor Elena approached the doorway, the sigils pulsed with a faint magical light. With a deep rumble, the door creaked open, revealing the darkness within. A wave of damp, stale air rushed out, carrying the earthy scent of moss and the musty tang of long-dormant magic.

Taking a deep breath, Professor Elena gestured towards the entrance. "Welcome, class," she announced, her voice echoing slightly in the confined space, "to the first floor of our training dungeon. This level, as you'll soon discover, is designed to test your adaptability to damp and low-visibility conditions."

Stepping through the doorway, the students were met with an immediate drop in temperature. The air hung heavy with moisture, clinging to their clothes and sending shivers down their spines. Sunlight, unable to penetrate the depths of the dungeon, offered no natural illumination.

Darkness pressed in from all sides, broken only by the faint glow emanating from Professor Elena's staff, which pulsed with a soft, blue light.

The floor beneath their feet was slick with moisture, a carpet of damp moss cushioning each step. The rhythmic drip of unseen water echoed from somewhere deeper within the dungeon, adding to the eerie atmosphere. A faint bioluminescent glow emanated from patches of fungi clinging to the rough-hewn walls, casting grotesque shadows that danced in the darkness.

The dampness wasn't just present in the air; it seemed to seep into their very bones. Each breath felt heavy, laden with moisture that clung to their lungs. The musty smell, a combination of decaying vegetation and stagnant water, filled their nostrils, making it difficult to breathe.

This was just the first floor, yet it was already clear – navigating this dungeon would require more than just physical strength; it would demand mental fortitude and a keen awareness of their surroundings. The damp, oppressive conditions were just the first challenge waiting to be overcome.

The students, their senses heightened, exchanged nervous glances as they took their first tentative steps into the artificial labyrinth, the thrill of competition momentarily overshadowed by the oppressive dampness of the first floor. They were Players now, and their journey had begun.

Professor Elena's voice cut through the oppressive dampness as she issued final instructions. "Remember to stay alert and not to be overconfident. Now, go!"

With a crackle of magical energy, the students vanished, each transported to different points within the first floor of the artificial labyrinth. Noah found himself alone in a seemingly plain chamber. No obvious exits or puzzles presented themselves, just a smooth, moss-covered floor and the same dim, bioluminescent glow emanating from the fungi clinging to the walls.

But the quiet was shattered in an instant. A guttural growl echoed through the chamber, followed by the clatter of clawed feet on damp stone. Five goblin figures materialized from the shadows, their beady eyes gleefully fixed on Noah as their short swords glinting in the faint light.

Adrenaline surged through Noah's veins. The competition had begun, and the first challenge was a test of his combat prowess. A familiar weight settled in his hand as he summoned Nemesis, his black sword materializing with a soft hum. The sight of the obsidian blade drew a collective gasp from the goblins, their initial bravado momentarily replaced by a flicker of fear.

There was no time for hesitation. Noah launched himself into action, he was so fast that his body left some afterimage. Nemesis moved like an extension of his will, a blur of black slicing through the damp air. With a flick of his wrist and a surge of power, Noah channeled his inner darkness, fueling the blade's inherent magic.

The first goblin fell before it could even raise its sword, cleaved cleanly in two by a swift diagonal slash. Another lunged, but Noah met its attack with a ringing parry, sending the goblin's blade clattering to the floor. A single, precise counter-attack found its mark, severing the creature's leathery hide.

The remaining goblins, their initial bloodlust replaced by raw fear, tried to scatter. But Noah was relentless. His movements were fluid and precise, fueled by years of training and a newfound sense of purpose. With each swing of his black sword, another goblin fell, their forms dissolving into wisps of dark smoke.

The battle was over in a matter of seconds. Noah stood panting in the center of the chamber, the chilling silence broken only by the rhythmic drip of water somewhere deeper within the dungeon. He had faced his first challenge within the artificial labyrinth, and he had emerged victorious.
