Chapter 628 - Next in Line (2)
Something Feng Tianyi found foolish in his opinion. Tang Lixue should have abandoned the Tang family if he had known that they would betray him and his children in the future. Damn that filial piety. If Feng Tianyi was in Tang Lixue's shoes, he would rather forsake his whole family if that meant he would be able to protect Tang Moyu and their children's lives.
It was Tang Lixue's weakness and indecisive nature that pushed Yan Qiuyu to make such a decision to let him go, taking their twins away from him. Tang Lixue was fine with being poor and not being a young master of a wealthy family, but he couldn't just watch his aging parents lose everything they had.
Tang Lixue was left helpless over his situation. How could he just leave his lover who had just given birth to his children to marry a woman he couldn't come to love over the years of their engagement? In the end, Yan Qiuyu made things easy for him by letting him go, allowing him to follow his father's arrangement to marry Zhang Wuying.
"Then, who is it?" Zhang Jiren demanded from the devil. He was visibly shaking from anger. He needed to know… he wanted to know the bastard that took everything from him.
Feng Tianyi sighed and looked at Zhang Jiren's distressed reaction. This was what he already expected to see and hear from Tang Moyu once he told her about this, but he should have known that Zhang Jiren would react the same as his sister.
"There's no concrete evidence yet, Zhang Jiren," he said truthfully, "but we can speculate that the Tang family might be the one involved in your mother's death and the attempt on your life. The Zhang family might be involved, too, but how they played a part in it, we still don't know." He added, not breaking his gaze towards his brother-in-law.
"As you know, you are supposed to be the next in line in succession if your father truly refused to consummate his marriage with Zhang Wuying. Moyu wasn't the threat to the Tang and Zhang families," Feng Tianyi said straightforwardly, not sugarcoating his words, "You are."
Zhang Jiren's jaw hardened. It took time for Feng Tianyi's words to sink in his mind, but he knew that his brother-in-law was right. As Tang Lixue's first-born son, it was only natural for others to be threatened by him. It didn't matter if he was an illegitimate child. As long as he was Tang Lixue's child, he still had the right to fight for inheritance and succession.
However, none of it mattered to Zhang Jiren. The Tang family could go to hell for all he cared as long as he would have his mother in good health and his twin sister by his side. Alas, they were taken away from him, depriving him of the love and affection for all of these years.
"So it might be that old man Tang?" Zhang Jiren could almost see red. His fists clenched tightly as he was itching to hit something or someone to vent all the pent-up anger and frustrations he nurtured over the years.
Why did he have to suffer because of someone else's greed? Why did their innocent mother have to die just because they were losers who only knew how to take but not to work hard for what they wanted?
Zhang Jiren swore that he would make everyone pay for the suffering he and his whole family endured over the years. He wouldn't stop until he found out the mastermind behind their mother's death and who attempted to kill him when he was young.
It didn't matter if it was the Tang family nor the Zhang family; he wouldn't let anyone leave unscathed when he found out who it was.
Feng Tianyi stood from his seat and eyed Zhang Jiren impassively.
"Calm down. You wouldn't want to attract attention by being angry. You shouldn't let your emotions get the best of you. Remember, you have someone to protect, and you shouldn't make a mistake." He reminded his wife's brother. Feng Tianyi understood that Zhang Jiren was mad, but it wouldn't help if he allowed his rage to blind him.
Zhang Jiren pressed his lips together into a thin line and nodded back to Feng Tianyi. He should know better how bad it would be if he allowed his anger to get the best of him, something he wanted so badly to avoid now. However, it was difficult to be calm when he was reminded of what he and Tang Moyu suffered from in the past.
"I understand. So what do you plan to do now?" he asked Feng Tianyi. He had to admit that he was impressed by Feng Tianyi's ability to dig information about an event that happened several years ago. Not everyone had such a feat and resources to get the information they wanted.
"What else but to continue investigating? Moyu asked for my help, and as her husband, I cannot fail her. If you are sure with your decision of not revealing yourself to my wife, fine… but don't expect me to cover up for you if she finds a lead and suspects you in the future."
It was already hard for Feng Tianyi to keep this a secret from his wife, but what can he do? Although he didn't want to be on bad terms with Tang Moyu, he also wanted to respect Zhang Jiren's decision.
"I understand. I'll be more careful from now on." Zhang Jiren gave his word. He was lucky that it was Feng Tianyi who was able to find him first as he wasn't sure how Tang Moyu would react once she found out the truth.
"Then, let's go." Feng Tianyi gave Zhang Jiren a look over his shoulder. "I don't want to keep them waiting. We'll have more time to talk in the future. For now, we have to first find out who's stalking Moyu."
