Chapter 686 - I’ll Marry You (2)
The next day, when Zhang Jiren's car arrived at the Civil Registry Bureau, where he was about to register his marriage with Li Meili, the sun was already up in the sky, blinding everyone with its intense light. Before he stepped out of the car, Zhang Jiren placed his sunglasses on and proceeded to meet the Li siblings.
Li Yuanyi had given him a call earlier that morning, informing him about Chairman Li's intention for him to sign a prenuptial agreement before he could proceed with marrying Li Meili. Li Meili shook her head towards him, informing her that she had nothing to do with it as the contract they had with each other had been signed by both parties last night.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Zhang. My father can be unpredictable at times." Li Yuanyi said, not sure if the other man would be offended by his father's sudden request.
They moved to a secluded area in the Civil Registry Bureau and Zhang Jiren removed his sunglasses to read the terms properly. He should have expected that Chairman Li wouldn't allow his only daughter to marry him without some precautions prepared ahead of time.
He had to admit that the old man was sly for forcing him to agree that in the event that he and Li Meili had to part ways, he wouldn't have any right to interfere or touch her and the child's inheritance, not that he was planning to anyway.
Also, a private villa owned by the Li family will be passed to him and Li Meili once they are married. This was the old man's way of making sure that his daughter would be safe and away from the Zhang family's sight, which was great in Zhang Jiren's opinion.
"It's fine." He replied as he turned the paper to the next page to see if there were other clauses he needed to pay attention to. To be honest, this prenuptial agreement was heavily favoring Li Meili and her child, something Zhang Jiren didn't find fault in, but surely his 'father' would object once he found out about the contents of this contract.
Li Yuanyi watched as Zhang Jiren carefully read the contract he brought with him. Seeing that the two had no other choice but to get married today, he partly blamed himself for even suggesting this to his sister.
"I'm sorry." He told Zhang Jiren who raised a brow in confusion at him. Why the hell Li Yuanyi was apologizing to him right now?
"Why are you apologizing?" Zhang Jiren could see a hint of guilt on the other man's face.
"Because I was the one who suggested this deal to Meili. I didn't know she actually went and convinced you to do this. It's my fault." Li Yuanyi admitted with guilt.
Li Meili crossed her arms and sighed, feeling another headache coming her way.
"It's not your fault. I was the one who made a decision." She told her older brother. "Let's just hope that our next two years would be peaceful for the two of us."
"Still…" Li Yuanyi wanted to argue that he was still partly responsible for it but Li meili won't hear any of it.
"It's alright. There are things and decisions to be made eventually. Since I agreed to marry your sister, I could only promise you that I will take care of her." Zhang Jiren said once he was done reading the prenuptial agreement Li Yuanyi presented to him.
Li Yuanyi knew that there were so many things that could happen within two years but as he tried to see if there was deceit on Zhang Jiren's face, he realized that this man was truly willing to give up the two years of his life for his sister's sake without asking too much in return.
"Then please do so. It's hard for me to keep up with Meili." He told his new brother-in-law.
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean, you dimwit?!" Li Meili scowled at her brother.
"Nothing, Little Monster. I'm just trying to warn your husband to be wary of you. Who knows what you would do to him as he sleeps."
Zhang Jiren let out a small smile to spread on his lips as he watched the Li siblings interact. In spite of their banterings, it was obvious that the two cared for each other. He somewhat wishes he could have such an amazing bond as a sibling to his twin sister but how could that be when Tang Moyu was still oblivious about his existence?
"What? You are complaining now? Didn't you know how much travelling I should do back and forth from Beijing to Shenzhen just because Dad wanted me to check on you, to make sure you are fine?"
"Why do you keep listening to that old man? Are you his dog?" Li Meili harrumphed.
"Ah, even if I'm a dog, I'm pretty sure I am tamed and cuter than you, Little Monster!" Li Yuanyi refused to lose this time to his younger sister.
"Damn you, Li Yuanyi! Who are you calling a little monster? Just you wait until I return to Shenzhen! I will make sure to show Meng Yanran your ugly photos when you were a snotty kid!"
"Why, you-!" Li Yuanyi could imagine himself with steam coming out from his ears with his reddened face. Surely his little sister knew where to poke him where it hurts.
Zhang Jiren pulled out a pen and didn't waste time signing the prenuptial agreement on his hands before passing it to Li Meili for her to sign too. The Li siblings stopped arguing at once as Li Meili accepted the papers and signed it without hesitation.
"Now let's go and register our marriage." Zhang Jiren said while Li Yuanyi reviewed the papers the two signed today. "Shall we go, milady?" He offered his hand to his twin sister's best friend. Li Meili accepted willingly. From this day forward, they would be a married couple and legally binded as husband and wife.
