Chapter 696 - Don’t Leave, Uncle (2)
If she knew the truth about Feng Tianyi's accident, he feared that it would only make her hate him. So it was better if she didn't associate herself with him at all. This would also protect them from being suspected by the Zhang family.
If Zhang Xianzhe found out that Zhang Jiren knew that he was Tang Lingjun, there would be a chance for his plans to be derailed and Li Meili's life would be in danger. The less people knew that they knew each other, the better.
"Fine. Let it be that way." Tang Moyu agreed with him.
If Zhang Jiren believed that she was that weak, that she couldn't protect herself and her loved ones, she didn't need to waste time to explain her side, her actions would prove it. She would never allow herself to shed tears because of the Zhang family ever again.
She rose from her seat and decided that what he said was enough for her for now. Tang Moyu knew that there were things she have yet to know about this twin brother of hers whom she just met.
Zhang Jiren followed her lead and stood up, watching her retreating figure. As much as he wanted to become part of her life, her family, he knew that this wasn't the right time for it. Being married to Li Meili had also complicated the things between them.
'I'm sorry, Sis.' He thought and looked ashamed of himself.
Zhang Jiren regretted what he'd done years ago. If he hadn't been so reckless with his revenge, Feng Tianyi wouldn't have gotten involved in that accident and no innocent people would lose their life because of it. Perhaps this should be fine for now. He didn't want to wish for more and could only be content that at least, Tang Moyu was now aware of his existence.
When the two came down, they were welcomed by a scene where Li Meili was being crowded by Xiao Bao and Little Star at the couch, fighting to get her attention. Since they hadn't seen Li Meili for a few weeks now, they were eager to catch up with their godmother.
"Auntie Mei, can you not go home just yet? We wanna play with you." Little Star used her cuteness to convince Li Meili.
"Work. Work. Work. You always say you are busy at work so you couldn't see me and Little Star. Does Auntie Mei not like us anymore?" Xiao Bao asked.
Li Meili burst into laughter as she realized that these two little buns were now experts in guilt-tripping someone. Ah, this must be a trait they both got from their father because she couldn't remember Tang Moyu acting like a spoiled child when they were younger.
She smiled when she saw her best friend and husband came back, joining them in the living area while Feng Tianyi was seated on an armchair, reading the manuscript he had yet to finish for his new book.
"I should go now." Zhang Jiren announced, checking the time on his wrist before acknowledging Li Meili. "You can stay here and spend time with Xiao Bao and Little Star if you want to. I'll send someone to pick you up, just in case I won't be able to return on time."
Li Meili nodded. It was enough that he was being considerate towards her as his wife. They might not have married for love, but she and Zhang Jiren decided to be amicable and respectful towards each other so the two years of their marriage wouldn't put a strain on their relationship.
Little Star frowned and slipped down from the couch, running towards Zhang Jiren to wrap her small arms around his leg, surprising him.
"Uncle, you are leaving so soon? Can't you stay with us and Auntie Mei?" She pouted, not eager to let her new uncle out of her sight yet.
"Little Star, didn't Uncle Jiren say that he would be very busy at work?" Xiao Bao called after his twin sister. "You should let Uncle go so he can finish them as soon as possible."
"Yes, Little Star. I'm sure your uncle needs to finish a lot of work today. He only came to drop your Auntie Mei and see the two of you, but that doesn't mean he could stay for very long." Tang Moyu coaxed her daughter to release Zhang Jiren leg but failed.
Little Star cried and refused to see her uncle go, which made Zhang Jiren feel guilty and awkward at the same time.
"Nooooo! Don't leave yet!" She cried out.
Seeing that his wife was having a hard time placating their daughter, Feng Tianyi put down the papers he was reading and sighed. He went and lifted Little Star from the ground, carrying her in one arm.
"Darling, don't cry anymore. Since your Uncle Jiren promised to visit you soon, shouldn't you believe him?" He questioned his daughter.
Little Star shook her head and buried her face in Feng Tianyi's arms, her head stuck on his shoulder, gripping his shirt with her small hands.
"But what if he doesn't come back like Uncle Beixuan? Wuuuu, Daddy, I don't want to lose Uncle Jiren too." Little Star said in between her sobs, shocking the a.d.u.l.ts.
Li Meili lowered her gaze and rubbed her arm unconsciously while Tang Moyu pressed her lips together in understanding. They had thought that the little buns weren't that affected by Tang Beixuan's death. This was the first time Little Star voiced out her fear as she wept in her father's arms.
No wonder Little Star had a hard time allowing Tang Wanyu to leave the country before her flight the other day. She was afraid that she would never see her again. They should have realized the fear Tang Beixuan's death left on their children.
Zhang Jiren patted Little Star's head in understanding.
"Uncle Jiren will be very, very careful when driving. I promise to come back soon. So don't cry anymore, okay?"
