Chapter 172 Meph (3)

[Meph's POV]

'I wonder what I should get for Lily today?' Meph thought with a small smile. He had been growing the little crops in his backyard for her, after all.

Food was nothing but a means of satisfaction for him; mana was tastier and more filling. That was not the case for Lily, however.

But just as he had that thought, a tiny amount of mana emerged from the distance, particularly in the wooden house he had built for her to live in.

A small frown appeared on his face, but just as quickly, it disappeared as he began walking towards the house, using his abilities to grow the nearby crops.

'I wonder how the food storage is doing? I should really stop putting it off and check,' Meph thought with a sigh as he finally arrived in front of the house.

Quickly opening the door, he spotted Lily, or as her mother named her, Lilith. She was a cute little child, making everyone around her care for her dearly.

Or that was the case until a few decades ago. Her mother couldn't hide her any longer, so she gave Lily over to him. In exchange, he had to take care of her and he would receive a little gift.

It was not a tough task. He had been ruling over his domain for quite some time now, and no issues had ever arisen.

However, the first couple of years when Lily arrived were eye-opening, to say the least.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

She managed to wreck most of his creations, which were typically just puppets doing menial work. The denizens of his land were not a very rowdy bunch, more like guardians rather than workers.

But Meph preferred it that way. There were at most 200 people, and he knew every single one of them.

Though that did not mean he trusted them wholeheartedly, as none of them were even aware of Lily.

Her identity was a sensitive matter, one that he would prefer keeping to himself since if word got out who she was the child of, it would be very troublesome.

While he thought of himself as strong, he was definitely not the strongest in all of the realms—not even close.

However, he could still protect her from the beings of his own land. At the very least, that would be good enough.

'Good enough as long as she doesn't use mana...' The frown once again appeared on his face, but upon meeting Lily's gaze, it disappeared.

"You didn't use mana, did you, Lilith?" Meph teased, trying to get a reaction out of her. However, just like all the other times she did not listen to him, she merely shook her head in denial.

He sighed inwardly but maintained the smile on his face as he said, "Good. Make sure to not use it, okay? If you do, then bad people would come looking for us."

Lilith merely nodded back at him, but if this was the same scenario as always, then she would likely do it again once he went out to work.

Meph couldn't find it in himself to be strict enough to not allow her some degree of freedom. He had resolved himself to defend her with his life, no matter what danger might come.

She was practically a daughter, one that he never knew he was capable of loving. But even despite his age, some things remain unpredictable; the future was not certain either.

That was why he cherished each moment he spent with her. If things turned out for the worst, he would be there to ride it through.

'Oh Lily... I just wish you listened to me sometimes,' Meph exclaimed inwardly and patted her head before putting her back onto the ground.

He glanced around the room, especially at the comfortable cotton bed he had managed to acquire through a duel to the death on another world.

Most beings of similar power as him were not very interested in material things. Such commodities like a cotton bed, however, were precious and far between the lands.

Fights were mostly easy for him as well, as all he had to do was destroy the opponent's brain, and he could do that to anyone who was of similar strength to him.

Therefore, he kept acquiring items—all for the sake of Lilith. There was even a little corner in the house where all sorts of plushies were stored, seemingly cast aside.

However, he did not have the heart to actually throw them out. They held memories, memories that he could maintain with his abilities but decided to do it more naturally.

It made him feel normal.

But just as he was spending time enjoying the calm and cozy atmosphere, a surge of killing intent sprang out from behind him, directed straight at Lilith.

However, just before the surge of killing intent was about to reach Lilith, he blocked it using his mind and turned his gaze in the direction of where it came from.

There was a single person there, one who was currently walking directly towards their little home.

Meph maintained his warm smile as he turned his gaze towards Lilith and patted her on the head once again before saying, "Lily dear, please stay here for a moment, okay? I have to greet a few important guests."

He was met with a few nods once again; she was not very fond of talking unless it was related to food anyway.

Without waiting any longer, he went directly outside, closing the door tightly shut behind him and even reinforcing it with the mana he was using.

Chaos—it was an interesting concept, one that he was able to grasp after eons of time studying it, and alas, the results were very fruitful.

It was only a theory at first. He was naturally gifted at using mana. However, the demonic mana proved to be a bit of an issue, one that he overcame with time.

But alas, chaos was how you perceived it to be. It can breed life while also taking it away—the perfect type of energy resource suiting him.

Meph finally finished reinforcing the house with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of miniature barriers, making sure that no one would be able to get in.

Not even if the world imploded on itself—that was how much he had perfected his barrier technique.

However, he now had to deal with the little disturbance, one who seemed to not be from around here.

Meph glanced at the person before him. It was a man with flowing golden hair and eyes—a trait most familiar to a certain race.

Nonetheless, the disrespect he had shown would not go unpunished. "To what do I owe this visit, angel?"

"An angel? Well... I guess you could say that." The man began laughing to himself before quickly halting and sending out another wave of killing intent.

'Is he an idiot?' Meph thought with furrowed brows and slightly raised his hand before tapping it onto the air.

A small ripple appeared where he tapped, and suddenly, it traveled straight at the intruder before impacting his face and causing him to limply fall onto the ground.

'That was all it took, huh... even the higher tier of angels are nothing,' Meph sighed to himself as he began turning around and heading back to spend some time with Lilith.

However, the moment he turned his back, the man slowly began rising from the ground. He was missing his entire face, yet despite that, it was slowly regenerating at a pace visible to the naked eye.

Meph stared at the regenerating head with a massive frown appearing on his face as he spoke, "You are no angel. Who are you?"

He did not receive a response. Instead, loud laughter once again resounded, followed by another wave of killing intent, which he simply brushed off.

'This is too unpredictable. I need to take him out of here...' Meph thought and slashed the space before him, creating a small fissure that sucked the intruder in.

Meph decided to go along and enter the fissure as well. It was not every day he saw a being regenerate a vital organ, especially one as important as the head.

It might even give him some ideas for research.

'I wonder, what kind of chimera are you?'
