The men at the courtyard talked loudly about some rated stories they heard of.
When Huang He came back to the living room, Tian Danyue was wearing a displeased and gloomy expression.
Huang He sat back down and looked at her. “What’s up?”
Tian Danyue let out a snort. “These people are really uncouth.”
Huang He looked towards the door and showed a smile. “At least we won’t feel lonely.”
Tian Danyue stared at him in confusion.
She didn’t expect that Huang He would say something like that and her eyebrows were crinkled together. “What’s with you?”
Huang He was not acting his usual manner and she had noticed it.
However, Huang He just shrugged it off with a laugh and tapped the ashes off the cigarette on the ashtray. “We’re just waiting here endlessly anyway. If they didn’t create some noises, it would be too boring.”
Tian Danyue pressed her lips together for a moment as she watched him laugh but she couldn’t do the same at all.
“Just wait,” said Huang He in a consoling tone, “There’s no hurry.”
“Mm.” Tian Danyue looked outside of the window. “The snow’s getting bigger. It’s also good to wait until it’s smaller.”
...
It snowed for a long time.
When Huang He said there was no need to hurry, he really did seem to behave that way. He would sip his tea in relaxation and would even laugh when they cracked some hilarious rated jokes. He totally seemed as if he was not out on a delivery mission at all. Tian Danyue scrutinized him but couldn’t understand him at all. Or rather, right from the beginning, she had never been able to understand Huang He.
About two hours of plain sitting around, Shi Bao suddenly entered the house with a plastic smile.
“Brother Ying just called.”
Huang He looked up casually. “What did he say?”
Shi Bao’s chuckle was a little strange. “Deliver the goods to the Capital and prepare to celebrate the Lunar New Year.”
Huang He seemed to have been encouraged as he sprang up from the chair and snuffed out his third cigarette.
“Alright!”
His sudden change confounded Tian Danyue. She followed Huang He and took several glances at him. It seemed like she had something to say to him.
Huang He swept a glance at her. “Are you cold? Get in the car and wait for us.”
Tian Danyue kept quiet for a moment and suddenly asked Shi Bao a question. “Did Brother Ying really say to make the delivery during day time?”
“What’s wrong with making the delivery in the day time?” Shi Bao cackled out loud and patted Huang He’s shoulders. “Brother Huang’s with us, it’s the same whether it’s morning or night.”
Huang He laughed it off. “Old brother spoke too highly of me. I won’t disappoint Brother Ying’s trust and that’s it.”
...
They had been using the word ‘goods’ all these time which Huang He had thought that the delivery would involve an enormous amount of drugs but in fact, he was only given a small box.
Several bags of well-packaged washing powder was packed in a small cardboard box and handed over to Huang He.
Huang He patted the box a few times. “With just one look,” he sneered, “these did not seem to be any different from the washing powder. Such technology...”
“Hur, that’s of course!” Shi Bao touched his chin as his eyes swept past Huang He. “Seems like you’re unable to enjoy my taro roasted chicken.”
Huang He grunted a laugh. “The mission has to take priority. There’s always another chance to eat that.”
Shi Bao laughed. “Alright then, I won’t be seeing all of you off.”
Huang He: “There’s no need for that, just go back. It’s very cold outside.”
Besides Tian Danyue and San’er, there was also another fellow who accompanied them here. He acted as the substitute driver who took turns with San’er to drive the car.
The four of them were on their way back to where they came after receiving the goods.
Tian Danyue was still very distracted. “Do you want to go have our lunch somewhere before we head back?”
Huang He took a look at the trunk. “It might not be convenient? Better not.”
Tian Danyue persuaded, “But the moment we get on the highway and if we’re hungry...”
Huang He: “If we’re really hungry, we can still grab some food on those resting areas on the highway.”
Tian Danyue opened her mouth but ultimately stopped trying to persuade him. “Mm, okay then.”
Silence prevailed again.
Just as their car was about to enter the highway, there was a traffic jam in front of them. From a distance, they could make out that there were police cars up front as their flashing lights were switched on.
The young fellow who was driving was immediately flustered when he saw that. Even his voice was shaking. “What should we do? It’s the police.”
“Stay calm!” Huang He said indifferently, “The police doesn’t eat people.”
The young fellow didn’t dare to make another sound.
Huang He took a look at the cars that were queuing up to get past the police check. “San’er, go find out what is happening?”
San’er didn’t seem willing to do that. However, An Ying had specifically told him to obey Huang He’s instructions before a lot of people. He had no choice but to comply.
There were people coming down from both sides of the cars and vehicles from time to time to talk with the pedestrians by the sides of the road. From what they said, it seemed that the police had stopped a car in front of them and asked the driver to get down the car for an inspection. The driver refused to cooperate. In the process of escaping from the police, the driver was forced to stop his car and had abandoned it in order to run away from the police...
Huang He sat quietly while Tian Danyue would steal occasional glances at him.
At this time, a figure was rushing towards their direction and happened to collide with San’er who just got off the car to find out about the situation.
“Aiyoh!” San’er let out a cry out of reflex.
The other party looked up. Both of them were instantly dumbfounded for a moment when they saw each other.
“San’er?”
“... Ah Fei?”
“Quick! The police will catch up soon, run!”
Ah Fei directly grabbed San’er and ran as fast as he could. San’er was dragged along and turned for a glance at the police officers who were holding guns and were chasing after them. They were shouting “Don’t move” and “Stay right there”. He clearly knew that this had nothing to do with him. But Ah Fei had indirectly dragged him into the matter when he pulled him along...
At this moment, there was no point trying to explain himself.
The moment they got caught by the police, they would be in hot soup.
There were a thousand “d*mmits” inside his head but he could only run with all his might...
While he was running, he took a glance at the car that Huang He was on.
The car window was opened and Huang He was looking at him.
That gaze of his gave him goosebumps as Huang He was actually smiling.
San’er’s eyes went agape but Huang He had already rolled up the windows.
Bang!
A gunshot was heard. The people at the scene were shocked and frightened.
“We’ll shoot if you continue to run!”
“Stop!”
The earlier shot was just a warning shot fired into the air. San’er was so terrified that he felt his knees going weak. He was still thinking about Huang He’s cold smile that made his spine chilly and felt that something was amiss. He was about to take out his mobile phone to make a call when a flying kick from behind hit him at his leg.
San’er fell to the ground.
And a foot was stepping on him.
Quan Shaoteng looked down at him and the man called Ah Fei.
“You still want to bleeping run from me? Do you know that I’m also a champion of long-distance races?”
San’er was being subdued but he was still trying to take his mobile phone which was now on the ground. Just as he was about to reach it, Quan Shaoteng took it away from him.
“Handcuff these two and bring them back!”
“...”
The commotion ended.
The traffic police then assisted to alleviate the traffic and about 15 minutes later, Huang He’s vehicle was finally able to move.
Huang He gave a command. “Let’s go!”
“Yes,” replied the nervous young driver as he started the car.
Huang He took a look at Tian Danyue and fished out his packet of cigarettes. “It should be fine if I take a puff, right?”
Tian Danyue didn’t reply. Huang He also stayed quiet as he lit a cigarette and smoked silently as though what happened to San’er earlier did not take place at all.
They were obviously one person down but there seemed to be of no difference at all.
The young driver didn’t dare to ask anything in this strange atmosphere either.
Even after they got onto the highway and could no longer see any police cars, the atmosphere remained shrouded in a fog.
Tian Danyue could no longer take it. She has had enough of this “torture”. She turned suddenly towards Huang He.
“San’er got caught. Do we need to tell Brother Ying about it?”
