Rebirth of a Farming Wife

Chapter 540: 547: So Arrogant

Chapter 540: Chapter 547: So Arrogant

Although Han Yu’s words were a tad chauvinistic, Su Wenyue still felt quite pleased to hear them; she had no great ambitions and merely wanted to live her peaceful little life without the desire to compete with men for power. It was a good thing for a man to be willing to shoulder responsibilities.

“I just love this side of you, Husband. You’re getting better at speaking; it’s satisfying to hear. Just remember, such sweet talk is only for me. Don’t think I’m unaware of the barracks’ gossip about women when you guys have downtime. Don’t let them influence you, because you know very well how fierce your daughter-in-law can be. Who knows what I might be capable of,” Su Wenyue said as she gripped Han Yu’s collar, her tone imperious with a hint of a threat. Although it was a jealous remark, it didn’t come off as unpleasant at all.

Su Wenyue was being cautious, eliminating any potential threats before they could arise. Foolish women only know how to quarrel and get jealous over insignificant matters; there’s no fun in that. A truly smart woman knows to keep a firm grasp on her man so that everything else ceases to be an issue.

“How would I dare? With a little vinegar pot at home, I wouldn’t think of cozying up to another woman, for fear of toppling over the vinegar jar,” Han Yu said with a laugh as he pinched Su Wenyue’s nose. His wife’s jealousy was a good sign; it meant she cared about him, and he wasn’t a lecherous man anyway—one woman he liked was enough for him.

“So it’s not that you don’t want to, you just don’t dare,” Su Wenyue mimicked Han Yu’s usual threatening squint, but without his domineering aura, she ended up looking rather comical.

Naturally, Han Yu knew what his wife wanted to hear, but this time, he didn’t respond according to Su Wenyue’s wishes. Instead, he said, “Indeed, which is why you must stick close to me and not give any other woman a chance. If you pull a stunt like this one again, you might end up losing such a fine husband to another woman.”

Su Wenyue put on a displeased expression upon hearing this, but inside, she felt somewhat moved. It seemed Han Yu had been genuinely scared by what happened this time, which was why he was saying these things to frighten her. What could this be, if not care? A person like Han Yu, if he really harbored such thoughts, would never speak of them so openly.

“Alright, Han Yu! So you’ve had such thoughts. Let me tell you, forget about letting another woman take my place—I’ll keep a tight watch on you for life. If you dare as much as glance at another woman, you’ll face the sham family law when we get home!” Su Wenyue declared dominantly, indirectly assuring Han Yu as well.

Thinking it over, she realized her actions had indeed been foolish. She had gone off course in her thinking. While on the surface, it all seemed to be for Han Yu, in reality, it stemmed from her lack of trust that he would prioritize her over his career. If truly forced to choose, she feared she’d be the one abandoned. Rather than endure such an outcome, she’d prefer a clean death…added to that, the unsavory gazes of those people —a woman’s chastity is so precious— pushed her to choose the cruel option of jumping off the cliff, thinking it for the best, yet ultimately cruel to Han Yu.

Han Yu was very pleased with Su Wenyue’s response, but on the surface, he joked, “Then you better keep a close eye, because your husband has both talent and looks—there are plenty of women coveting me.”

“Don’t worry. No matter if it’s some seductive vixen, if one comes, I’ll chase one away. I’ll beat them off with a big stick, and don’t you dare feel sorry for them,” she said confidently.

“The only one I’d feel sorry for is my own daughter-in-law. How you deal with other women is entirely your business, I won’t object. However, speaking of which, you’ve recovered nicely over this period, able to wield a stick and all. So lively and vigorous, your strength must be back… Your husband has been dry for so long, perhaps it’s time you fulfill your wifely duties.”

“I don’t think so, all you men ever think about are those meaningless things,” Su Wenyue retorted, caught off guard by Han Yu’s sudden shift to such matters. Knowing that Han Yu had been considerate of her health and they hadn’t been intimate for a long time, she felt a mix of shyness and a bit of panic,

“There’s no avoiding it. Meeting your husband’s needs is part of your wifely duties. Since you’re such a little vinegar pot, with no one else to take care of me, you’ll have to do it yourself.”

“Um, well…”

An evening of passion ensued, with a tempest of love to rival the clouds and rain of Mount Wu.

Ever since Su Wenyue had angered Sikong Ling that day, he hadn’t shown his face for several days. Whether he was too busy, or merely afraid of Su Wenyue seeking retribution, she had actually wondered if Sikong Ling had realized the impropriety of his shamelessness, hence his absence.

No sooner had she thought this than Sikong Ling appeared before her, his demeanor as sanctimonious as ever, though his eyes betrayed an added emotion.

“Sikong Ling, you dare to show up!”

“Why wouldn’t I dare? Peach Blossom Valley is my turf. It’s only you, little girl, who’s so inhospitable to her host. If I didn’t take a liking to you, I would’ve thrown you to the wolves in Wild Wolf Valley long ago; how dare you act so arrogantly!” said Sikong Ling, taking advantage of Su Wenyue’s unguarded moment to tap her forehead, then he strode into the room. He had already asked if Han Yu was in before coming over.

Han Yu invited Sikong Ling to sit, for although Peach Blossom Valley belonged to Sikong Ling, the small courtyard was currently their living space; in this small courtyard, they were the masters.

“Young Master Sikong, you’ve come over at this time, surely there’s something you need to discuss?” Han Yu’s tone was certain. Sikong Ling, being the master of Peach Blossom Valley, was well aware of every little movement within. Previously, he had always chosen to visit when Han Yu was away, but now he had chosen this time, presumably with something to say to him.

“I’ve come to bid farewell. Yiyang Prefecture is likely to fall soon, and Chang’an City has been restless these days. Those people are making frequent moves; I must return to deal with some matters, chop off some unsettled claws. Otherwise, all these annoyances really irritate one,” Sikong Ling said nonchalantly as if it were nothing more than a common, easy task. However, Su Wenyue could hear the tumultuous undercurrents and bloody nature of his words. Sikong Ling wasn’t one to act lightly, but when he did, his actions were cruel and ruthless, leaving no room for escape. It seemed like quite a few people were in for some bad luck. Su Wenyue was no saint and had no interest in sympathizing with those about to be targeted by Sikong Ling; she was more concerned about her own issues.

“Since you’re going back to Chang’an, what about Han Yu and me? Can we leave now?” Su Wenyue asked bluntly, the question that Han Yu couldn’t ask.

“Tch, you naïve little girl! What does my return to Chang’an have to do with your leaving Peach Blossom Valley? Han Yu can leave whenever he wishes; I’m not holding him back. But as for you, with your rude attitude towards me, it makes me quite uncomfortable. Better you stay put in Peach Blossom Valley and don’t go causing trouble elsewhere.”n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
