Chapter 25: First Victory!
On the edge of the tumultuous battlefield, Logan stood observing the chaos below with a keen eye. As he spotted Mamuti making a break for it, he turned sharply to Commander Lotts, his voice urgent but composed. "Lotts, we need to act swiftly! Mamuti is of significant value to us, don't let him slip through our fingers!"
Lotts, momentarily taken aback by the sudden command, nodded sharply. "Understood!" With practiced ease, he swung himself onto the back of his towering wolf, ready to give chase.
Mamuti, the wayward son of Chief Duskin, possessed knowledge and connections that could turn the tide of their fortunes. "It would be a grave loss if he were to escape now," Logan muttered to himself, watching as the coalition forces faltered under pressure, their ranks breaking as they attempted to retreat.
Despite the old wisdom that warns against pursuing a defeated enemy, Crowe, the strategist of the Silver Mane Tribe, had not called off the pursuit. The tactical advantage was too great, and the moment was ripe to dismantle the coalition forces further.
As the coalition troops scattered in disarray, the wolf cavalry of the Duskin tribe received hasty orders from their captain. They executed a swift, coordinated retreat, their movements a stark contrast to the chaos that enveloped the other tribes' cavalry.
The Silver Mane and Youwa tribe soldiers relentlessly chased down the fleeing warriors. The combined might of their forces swiftly overcame the disjointed cavalry from Kala and Samo tribes, who were less familiar with each other and could not withstand the ferocious onslaught.
From afar, Mamuti, gripped by panic and remorse, dared not look back as he fled. His mind was a whirlwind of regret. As a fifth-level warrior, he was acutely aware of two pursuers closing in on him rapidly. "Damn it!" he cursed under his breath, regretting his decision to lead what he had assumed would be a straightforward attack.
This blunder, born out of a desire to impress his peers, was proving costly.
What he had envisioned as a display of tactical prowess was unravelling into a nightmare. The potential loss of his hundred beastmen warriors weighed heavily on him, and the fate of his wolf cavalry was uncertain at best.
Despite the potential safe return to his tribe, Mamuti knew that his standing among his people would suffer dramatically. The loss of a hundred beastmen warriors and as many wolf cavalry was a grievous blow to the Duskin tribe's strength.
Still, Mamuti clung to a vital creed: survival is the foundation of opportunity. His primary goal now was to make it back alive to the Duskin tribe, and he was confident in his chances. If he could just cover a few more miles or cross into the territory of another tribe, he had myriad ways to elude his pursuers.
Behind him, the urgency of the chase intensified. "Crowe! We need a plan, fast! If he gets away now, we'll lose him for good!" Lotts shouted breathlessly to Crowe, who was sprinting ahead.
Crowe's mind raced. Cursing silently, he knew there was little he could do. His third-level warg was already straining at its top speed, slightly slower than the fourth-level warg that bore Mamuti. The odds of catching up were dwindling rapidly.
He thought ruefully that if not for Logan' direct command, he might have called off this futile chase.
Hearing Lotts's desperate call, Mamuti allowed himself a thin, confident smile. This pursuit seemed to be another blunder by his foes, a miscalculation he was ready to exploit.
Just then, the unmistakable clamor of battle reached his ears.
What was that?
Confused, Mamuti glanced back and his heart sank. Bursting from the underbrush, a wolf cavalry unit appeared, blocking his path ahead. His eyes widened in shock, it was clearly an enemy detachment.
Behind him, Crowe and Bagan pulled up, equally taken aback. Bagan turned to Crow in disbelief, "Did you arrange this?"
Crow responded with equal confusion, "Not at all!"
Yet, as the scene unfolded, it became clear that these new arrivals were not foes but rather unexpected allies.
Mamuti was swiftly cornered as rows of wolf cavalry archers lined up ahead, bows drawn and arrows nocked, aimed directly at him.
"Mamuti, yield or die!" the lead archer bellowed, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife.
As Mamuti skidded to a halt, Crowe and lotts closed in from behind, their presence sealing any potential escape route. Surrounded by the formidable archers in front and the two fifth-level commanders behind, Mamuti recognized the futility of resistance.
He dismounted his warg with a resigned grace, well aware that even his skills as a fifth-level warrior would not be enough to fend off such a focused assault.
Recalling his earlier will to survive at all costs, he knew that to fight now would only ensure his death. "I surrender!" he declared, raising his hands in defeat.
The archers quickly dismounted and secured Mamuti with efficient, practiced motions.
As Crowe and Lotts approached, their eyes flicked between the bound Mamuti and the leader of the wolf cavalry, understanding dawning on them. "Was it the chief who ordered this ambush?" Crowe asked, eyeing the leader with a mix of surprise and respect.
Laughing heartily, a robust beastwoman rode forward to join them. "You two have truly outdone yourselves today. The battle fares well, it seems!" It was Cadia, commander of the Chief Guards, her arrival unexpected yet pivotal.
She was here on Logan' orders, leading the chief's guard to intercept any fleeing coalition forces. Discovering Crowe and Lotts in pursuit of a lone wolf cavalry had been an opportunity too good to pass up.
"To think it was Mamuti himself you were chasing," Cadia mused, her tone reflecting both surprise and satisfaction at the turn of events.
While Crow and Lotts processed the revelation, the implications of their success began to settle in. "The front lines are secure, and with Mamuti captured, we should head back," Crowe declared, signaling the shift from pursuit to consolidation.
Lotts nodded in agreement. Although the battle was decisively won, the aftermath required their attention, tending to the wounded, rounding up prisoners, and honoring the fallen would be their next duties as the dust of combat settled.
"Although Mamuti has been captured, our main mission remains, intercepting the fleeing wolf cavalry. Thus, I'm assigning the two of you to personally escort Mamuti back," Cadia explained with a strategic tone, outlining the continued importance of their role in the broader conflict.
Intercepting the defeated cavalry? Crowe realized the gravity of their continued task. "Understood," he replied with a nod, acknowledging the dual responsibility now placed upon them.
Quickly, Crowe and lotts, flanked by two wolf cavalry, led the captured Mamuti away from the front lines. They moved with purpose, each step taking them closer to fulfilling their assigned duties.
As she watched them depart, K
Cadia couldn't suppress a grin. The chief had initially tasked them with testing the combat readiness of their second cavalry group by intercepting fleeing enemies. Capturing Mamuti had been an unexpected but significant bonus. "This capture is a major victory," she mused, impressed by the serendipity of their success.
Turning to her fellow warriors, Cadia seized the moment to rally them further. "You guys, capturing Mamuti will surely please the chief!"
"Want to make the chief even more pleased?" She shouted, brandishing her wolf scimitar high into the air with a fierce grin.
"Think!" came the enthusiastic response, their voices booming in unison.
"Think!" they echoed again.
Fired up by their collective fervor, Cadia roared, "Then let's hunt down more prey to present to the chief!"
"Everyone, let's move out!" She commanded, and with a unified war cry, the guard wolf cavalry surged forward into the expansive wasteland, the only witnesses to their departure being the swaying weeds.
Meanwhile, back at the Silver Mane Tribe, Logan returned with a quartet of wolf cavalry guards. The battle won, there was little reason for him to endure the harsh wilderness winds any longer. He had made an early return to the tribe.
However, as soon as he entered through the tribe's gates, he found himself encircled by a crowd of eager faces, all buzzing with anticipation and curiosity about the outcomes of the battle.
