Jing Yun Zhao knew that she had guessed right when she saw the policeman’s reaction.
It was indeed one of the two; it couldn’t be Qiao Zi Zhou because he was a man who loved his dignity, so it could only be Jiang Xia.
Thinking back to his behaviour recently, Jing Yun Zhao laughed faintly, “Can Jiang Xia’s statement really be trusted? Officer, I advise you to look into Jiang Xia. He’s the one who truly has a deep relationship with Qiao Hong Ye. If Qiao Hong Ye ran away from home, the only person she can seek asylum with is him.
“You really don’t know where Qiao Hong Ye went?” The police officer remained in disbelief.
“I swear,” she confirmed.
Just as Jing Yun Zhao reconfirmed her statement, a husband and wife pair came from the stairs. The instant they saw the police standing in front of her, they rushed forward.
“What’s going on? Why are you looking for our eldest daughter? She wouldn’t do anything wrong!” Wang Xin Fang immediately spoke up.
Jing Tie Jun’s expression was heavy and he hurriedly stuffed a few cigarettes into the officer’s hands, “Children are ignorant, look for us adults if there are any problems.”
“Don’t worry, we’re only here to understand the situation, not because the child has done something wrong. Student, no matter what, you have to tell us first thing the moment you have any news. As a girl, it’s not safe for Qiao Hong Ye to stay outside. You were sisters in the past, it makes sense to help each other out when you can, right?” the police officer politely reminded her and left after he was done.
Jing Yun Zhao looked at Jing Tie Jun who was holding onto a case file, then judged his attitude; currently, she didn’t need to look at it to know the results.
The couple waited outside for a while. After school let out for the afternoon, Jing Yun Zhao accompanied the two to a family restaurant nearby. Taking a seat, she opened the case file, and as she expected—
—Probability of paternity: 99.99%
This meant that they were indeed parent and child.
Jing Yun Zhao’s feelings at that moment were complicated. She had once before imagined this result, but now that she was looking at the real thing, she didn’t know how to react. Especially when she recalled how miserable she had lived in her past life, she was struck speechless by the realization.
An abandoned child.
These words really were unpleasant.
“Xiao Yun, things are perfect now, our family’s finally reunited. You don’t know, but Mom nearly went blind from crying during the years you were gone,” Wang Xin Fang spoke as she grabbed hold of Jing Yun Zhao’s hand.
Her hand only felt abnormally cold.
If this reunion happened in her previous life, she would have definitely been ecstatic and cried tears of joy because, at that point, she had already given up all hope; the Qiao Family’s treatment of her was really just too horrible. However, in this life, she had already experienced all kinds of pain, even death itself. To her, the familial feelings right now were too late; she felt too stranger to it.
Nonetheless, no matter what, blood ties couldn’t be denied.
Jing Yun Zhao pulled the corners of her mouth into a smile. She originally wanted to change the way she called them, but the words felt unnaturally heavy in her mouth; she couldn’t say it out at all.
There was a moment of awkwardness.
“It’s okay, it’s okay even if you can’t call us now, don’t be afraid…” Wang Xin Fang hurriedly reassured her.
The husband and wife exchanged a look, and Jing Tie Jun spoke up shortly after, “Xiao Yun, since we’ve already recognized each other, I think it’s time for you to make a trip back to Shui Zhang Village. For one, it’s to greet our ancestors and sweep their graves, and at the same time, you can meet your younger siblings back home. Don’t you think it’s about time?”
“As it should be,” Jing Yun Zhao nodded. “Tomorrow then, I’ll ask for leave from my teachers”
That statement of hers made the two opposite of her overjoyed.
Aside from this conversation, they spent the entire meal in silence. Because Jing Yun Zhao still had classes in the evening, she took the opportunity to escape. She seriously couldn’t tolerate being the target of this pair of parents’ gaze.
The moment she left, however, Wang Xin Fang let out a huge sigh of relief, “I’ve never met such a difficult rascal. She’s still like this even after finding her biological parents; if I were her real parents, I’d definitely beat her to death!”1
