Chapter 24
Partaking In The Assessment
Bai Ye stared at Yun Mengmeng and wondered, ‘How dense can you be?’ It was clear Bai Ye had the support of the high-ranking official—Mu Yunzhan—and yet the girl would not give up.
Heedless of the precarious state of affairs, Yun Mengmeng ignored Hong Qiguan’s warning glances and knelt before Mu Yunzhan. Her arrogance was replaced with shameless self-pity. “Brother Mu, this vendor has witnessed the whole exchange. Please ask him yourself.”
With that, Yun Mengmeng pointed her finger at a man in the crowd.
The spotlight was suddenly on the weapons vendor. He was a mere commoner who did not wish to be involved. He did not want to offend Yun Mengmeng, but he was also afraid he would make unnecessary enemies…
Sensing the man’s hesitation, Yun Mengmeng gave him the evil eye and yelled, “Clarify the situation!”
The weapons vendor shivered as he recalled how Yun Mengmeng dealt with people who crossed her. The people from Banruo Village seemed like a sensible bunch, unlike Tong City’s Little Witch. He decided to speak in favor of Lady Yun.
Mu Yunzhan glanced at the weapons vendor and knew the man was unreliable. “There’s no need for an explanation. I was witness to the ordeal.” He wore an annoyed expression as he said to Yun Mengmeng, “I won’t interfere with your business but be mindful to exercise moderation.”
“I—” Yun Mengmeng was about to argue her case.
“I shall write to the Ministry of Civil Appointments when I return to the courts. Tong City is due for a change in governance,” Mu Yunzhan remarked vaguely before he signaled for Ji Fu and Bai Ye to follow him.
The young man’s words were a verbal slap to Yun Mengmeng’s face. Although she was an unruly brat, she was aware of the power Mu Yunzhan held in the courts. A message from him could threaten her father’s position as the lord of the city.
Mu Yunzhan was not only a fourth-ranked general, he was also a direct descendent of The Four Noble Families in Imperial City.
At that moment, Yun Mengmeng knew she made a big mistake. “I…”
Hong Qiguan shook his head and advised, “We should inform the lord. The sooner he knows, the better.” Secretly he was glad Mu Yunzhan had overlooked his attack on the little girl.
At her wit’s end, Yun Mengmeng nodded in agreement. “Right! My father will know what to do. That man can’t just do as he pleases. Let’s leave.”
Without sparing a moment, Hong Qiguan escorted Yun Mengmeng away from the marketplace. The wounded guards crawled back to the estate as fast as they could.
Meanwhile…
In the tavern, Ji Fu had conveyed the favor needed from Mu Yunzhan for Bai Ye to enter the Erudition Trials.
Mu Yunzhan agreed wholeheartedly. “That won’t be a problem. I have no doubt Lady Bai is gifted! I’ll have her registration done tonight. You only have to bring her to the halls when the assessment begins. Where should I deliver the form?”
Ji Fu did not expect the man to agree so readily. A broad smile bloomed on his face. “Hahaha! I like your efficiency, young man! Have it delivered to Yunqing Inn. Thank you.”
“It is my pleasure, Elder Ji Fu.” Mu Yunzhan smiled and made a toast to Ji Fu. The young man was an avid fan of Qin Ban and asked many questions about the warrior as they dined.
Bai Ye had little interest in alcohol. She tended to her Spiritual Energy as she ate her food.
Based on her observations during the stress fight, her Mystic Power was equivalent to a fifth-ranked practitioner and her fighting capability was above average.
In that case…
