Chapter 109 - 109 I’ll Knock On Your Door At Midnight
109 I’ll Knock On Your Door At Midnight
“Chuchu, I’ve realized my mistake now. This mouth of mine just spouts all sorts of nonsense when it has nothing better to say, but I really didn’t do it on purpose. So please let us off the hook, alright?” The elders from the Niu clan didn’t listen to Madam Qian’s pleas, so she went to beg Zhao Chuchu instead.
Zhao Chuchu’s face was completely expressionless. A crocodile’s tears wouldn’t make her feel pitiful at all.
Xie Heng pulled Zhao Chuchu behind him, then looked at Madam Qian straight on and said, “Words that have been spoken are like water that has been spilled from a cup. You can’t take them back so easily. If I had had any semblance of mistrust or suspicion toward Chuchu, these words would have been lethal to her. You made a planned, deliberate attempt to smear her. This cannot be brushed off as an unintentional act!”
Xie Heng was adamant about it. He insisted that Madam Qian and her son needed to be punished.
Otherwise, he didn’t mind bringing this up to the county governing bureau.
Madam Qian’s wails halted. Then, she asked, “I’ve already apologized. What more do you want?”
“It’s not about what I want. I think you guys should ask yourselves what you wanted just now by doing this!”
“Non…nonsense.”
Madam Qian realized that Xie Heng saw straight through her intentions. She didn’t dare look him in the eye.
Xie Heng smiled and stopped talking.
Madam Qian wanted to say something else, but the people of the Niu clan brought her into the ancestral hall.
Opening up the ancestral hall was a very serious thing for ancient people.
As an outsider, Zhao Chuchu wasn’t allowed to enter the Niu clan’s ancestral hall. However, because she was the victim, the Niu clan made an exception and allowed her to enter with the accompaniment of Xie Heng.
The Niu clan’s punishment instrument was a cane soaked in oil. One could tell just by looking that this cane would hurt a lot.
Niu Ziming came up with completely false claims out of nowhere and defamed the character of a woman. As a result, he would be beaten 30 times according to the clan’s rules.
Madam Qian was at fault for not educating her son well, so she would be beaten ten times.
With Zhao Chuchu and Xie Heng standing right beside them, the Niu clan didn’t dare spare any strength when administering the punishment.
The screams of Madam Qian and Niu Ziming made everyone’s hair stand on end.
Madam Qian kept begging for Zhao Chuchu’s forgiveness, but Zhao Chuchu simply watched on with cold eyes.
Niu Ziming toyed with the original owner like a plaything. One could even say that she died from anger because of Niu Ziming and Zhao Chuchu.
Even though the internals of this body had been swapped out with another soul from the apocalypse in the future, in the eyes of everyone else, Zhao Chuchu was still the same person.
Zhao Chuchu wasn’t willing to let a scumbag like Niu Ziming slander the original owner after she had already died.
After 30 strokes from the cane, Niu Ziming was barely breathing.
Madam Qian was still alright. Although ten strokes of the cane were painful, she wasn’t very severely injured.
When she saw Niu Ziming looking like he was breathing his last breath, she ignored her aching body and climbed over to hug her son. She cried at the top of her lungs, “My son, please don’t scare me!”
Niu Ziming opened his eyes, barely breathing. He moved his lips a little, but before he could make a sound, his eyes closed, and he fainted.
“Zhao Chuchu, quick, save my son…” Madam Qian yelled at Zhao Chuchu. “Aren’t you a doctor? If my son died, I…”
“What are you going to do? Kill me? Who do you think you are? Save your son? Stop dreaming! Who said that doctors have to save whoever asks? Besides, do you think your son deserves to be saved? I’m already being very kind by not killing him,” Zhao Chuchu cut off Madam Qian and spoke slowly.
“You’ll be struck by lightning and punished by god for not saving a dying person!”
“If god can see what’s going on, the first people that he should be smiting are vile, immoral people like you and your son.”
Zhao Chuchu sneered, then looked at Xie Heng and said, “Da Lang, let’s head back. I still need to do acupuncture and apply medication for you. You’ve just regained your vision, so you shouldn’t over-exert your eyes.”
“Okay,” said Xie Heng as he nodded.
Zhao Chuchu was standing very close to Xie Heng. Xie Heng could even smell the faint, refreshing fragrance of her body.
Zhao Chuchu’s scent seemed to be changing every day…
“Zhao Chuchu…”
Madam Qian screamed hysterically.
Zhao Chuchu stopped in her tracks, then turned and looked at Madam Qian. She sneered and said, “If you howl one more time, I’ll break your legs and join them back together for you. I would like to see whether you can endure half a year of pain!”
The killing intent in Zhao Chuchu’s eyes made Madam Qian instantly shut up. She didn’t even dare to breathe loudly.
“I don’t mind letting you see what I’m capable of.”
“You’re not Zhao Chuchu. You must be a wandering ghost who has occupied Zhao Chuchu’s body!”
Moments later, Madam Qian mustered the courage to yell again.
Zhao Chuchu nodded and said, “You’re right. I am a roaming ghost. So be careful when I knock on your door at midnight and take away you and your son’s souls!”
Madam Qian staggered back several steps upon hearing that. She looked at Zhao Chuchu as though she was looking at a demonic ghost.
Zhao Chuchu retracted her gaze, then turned and walked away with Xie Heng without even looking back.
Madam Qian didn’t dare make any more noise.
Niu Ziming was only injured on the outside. The people from the Niu clan didn’t dare spare any strength, but they didn’t hit Niu Ziming that hard either.
Niu Ziming could probably move around as usual after resting on the bed for about two weeks.
Upon returning to the Xie clan, Zhao Chuchu looked toward Xie Heng and asked, “Why did you let other people know that your eyes could see again? I thought you said we should wait for a while more?”
“As your husband in name, I can’t just watch as someone else is trying to slander you for having an affair. No man can accept being cheated on!” Xie Heng said in a joking yet serious manner.
As for what he was actually thinking, he was the only one who knew.
Zhao Chuchu doubted him. “Have you disliked Niu Ziming for a very long time? After all, this scumbag had been tricking your wife for quite a while.”
“Hmm, I suppose that’s half the reason.” Xie Heng agreed with Zhao Chuchu.
“This scumbag has really renewed my perspective on how bad a person can be. That was disgusting,” Zhao Chuchu said disdainfully. “I wonder if he will return to his old ways after healing from his injuries.”
“He’s afraid of dying, so we won’t come to pester you again. But, I’m afraid disgusting things will still happen.”
“Alright, but the person who will be disgusted may not be the same. The village chief and the others will definitely come over to visit you later. Come here. I’ll put on some ‘medicine’ for you!”
Xie Heng nodded.
Zhao Chuchu took out a clean strip of cloth, then laced it with some non-agitating and harmless organic paint to make it look like she was putting on medicine for Xie Heng before tying it around his eyes.
She stood right in front of Xie Heng while doing so.
Xie Heng was sitting down. When he raised his head a little, he could see Zhao Chuchu’s little face, which had been getting increasingly white and exquisite recently.
Perhaps because she was too close to him, Xie Heng felt the tip of his ears getting a little hot. He lowered his eyes as though he was evading Zhao Chuchu and avoided looking at her.
Fortunately, Zhao Chuchu was rather quick. It only took a short while for her to finish dressing Xie Heng’s eyes.
She touched her stomach and said, “Da Lang, did you cook? I’m so hungry.”
“Yes, it’s in the pot, stir-fried garlic sprouts with preserved bacon,” Xie Heng said. He paused for a while, then asked as though he had just remembered, “Do you eat garlic?”
“Of course, the taste is a little strong, but it goes well with rice,” Zhao Chuchu answered as she walked toward the kitchen.
The stove cavity still had some lingering heat, so the rice and dish were still hot.
“Where’s Junjun?”
Zhao Chuchu’s voice came from the kitchen and landed in Xie Heng’s ears. It made him feel different.
It felt as though they were really a couple that had been married and living together for many years.
Zhao Chuchu had never given Xie Heng this feeling before!
“He had already eaten. So I told him to go to the Chen clan.”
“Oh, so you haven’t eaten, right?”
Zhao Chuchu walked in with the dish and two full bowls of rice.
Other than the stir-fried garlic sprouts with preserved bacon, there was also spicy and sour cabbage.
Xie Heng was a great chef.
The food that Xie Heng cooked could be called a meal, while her cooking should be called pig food. Wait, no, even pigs were probably not willing to eat her cooking!
