Chapter 431 - Nailbiting Truth
Devin's hands trembled as he picked the mobile from the floor. Nothing but his own heartbeat echoed into his ears. He closed the picture, weening that it was his mind playing tricks on him, and after he opened the picture again, he would see a different face. Yet every time he does that, his heart beats faster and faster because the sketch of a silhouette leaning against the wall was none other than him.
''How did I become Leena's savior without I am aware of?'' Devin closed his eyes for a short while, but the pounding heartbeat intensified. After ending Walter's call, he thought of several ways to catch hold of that mysterious guy. In a cruel twist of fate, he got a thunderbolt surprise when he saw his own picture here.
He tried to convince his brain by telling that saving Leena was a mere coincidence. But the teardrops on the sketch? Why would he cry? Unless he knows her very well.
''Is it my lost memories?'' He still has no explanation for it.
According to Doctor Walter's investigation, the driver was there with him as well. What an irony of life? He is learning about himself through other sources.
''Leena's accident happened five years ago...so the driver during the time..'' Devin's voice trailed off at the realization. He hastily marched out of his office room and barged into Harley's office without knocking on the door. ''Harley_''
''You might be the CEO,'' Harley addressed Devin without lifting her eyes, knowing that no one would dare to barge into the room without knocking on the door. ''But I would suggest you follow the ethics.''
Ignoring her nonsense, Devin quickly said. ''I will give you an hour. Find Noel, and bring him to my office.''
''Noel?'' Harley lifted her eyes off the file to look at her weird brother. ''Isn't he your previous driver?''
''Yes_''
''What business you have got with him?'' Harley interrupted him again rather seriously. She wondered if a demon had possessed her brother's body after the accident. He orders her to investigate random people at random times, just like now.
''Your time is ticking. Bring him fast'' Devin turned back and went off.
''Weirdo,'' Harley muttered. A sigh escaped from her lips. ''Where are you, Noel!'' What if he is in a different city? No..no.. Let's be positive, Harley. She nodded in determination.
Meanwhile, Devin restlessly tapped his foot on the floor, his eyes drifted from the wall clock to the closed door. One hour seemed like an eon to him. His heart palpitated like an insomnia patient. Several thoughts and assumptions swirled across his brain, but he didn't want to jump to conclusions.
While he was in thoughts, he heard the sound of a door opening. His eyes immediately snapped to the door. Harley entered, followed by a man behind. ''Noel is here.'' Harley said, stepping aside.
''Hello, sir.'' Noel greeted him nervously. He was glad that he managed to speak without stuttering in front of Devin. Noel thought of him just two days back, and he is now standing in front of his ex-boss. Why did he call him here? Is it because he had stared at the girl in the dog show, and he called him to punish her? Noel swallowed hard.
Sensing it was personal, Harley went off, closing the door behind.
''Sit.'' At Devin's command, Noel sat on the chair, his muscles stiff in fear.
''Sir, you called me for?'' Noel's politeness didnot wear off, despite being an ex-employee of Devin.
''You remember the accident that happened in Seattle five years back?'' Devin questioned, propelling his elbows on the table.
''Y_es.'' Noel nodded his head in uncertainty, not understanding why he asked about it.
''Can you describe what exactly happened on that night?''
''Pardon, sir?'' Noel stared at Devin like he had gone insane.
''I mean it.'' Although he might sound weird to Noel, Devin doesn't have a choice except to rely on sources for his lost memories. ''What happened on that night?''
''Ummm..Late in the afternoon, I drove you back to the hotel after the business meeting ended. You were supposed to meet a friend in the evening, but you didnot go. It was during at night..I don't remember the exact time. You asked me to drive you to Capsolen cliff suddenly. The city was pouring heavily on that night. So, it took us four hours to reach the place. I stayed in the car at your command. Three hours later, you arrived carrying an injured girl in your arms.'' Noel explained the struggles they had to find the hospital and the later incidents.
Devin's throat constricted, making him difficult to swallow. How much did she suffer? He was the one who saved her, but he doesn't remember a thing about his past with Leena. ''Can you recognize her if I show you a picture of her?''
''I will try, sir.'' It's confirmed to Noel. His ex-boss has gone insane.
Devin opened the gallery and showed one of Leena's simple pictures to noel. ''Is it her?''
''Exactly. She is the one.'' Now it's confirmed. It's the same barbie beauty he had seen in the pet show. How could he forget a woman he had seen a couple of days back?
''Thanks. You may go,'' Devin replied. ''Meet Harley before you leave.''
Gladly, Noel thought. He bowed his head and left the room.
Devin still can't believe this truth. His soul took flight. No word of happiness left. He wanted to tell the truth right away, but not until he found the reason for his memories.
''Why did Morvena do that?'' Devin backtracked every event that took place after meeting Leena. Three months back, Enger entered Leena's life, claiming himself as her savior and mysterious friend as well. But recently, Leena concluded he was not her friend. So, the friend is...
Without waiting a second, Devin called Adney. As if the mobile was in handy, Adney picked up before it even rang fully.
''Adney.'' Devin parallelly texted a number to his mobile. ''I texted you a number. The current owner of this number is Enger Cassius Lennox. Can you trace if the SIM has a previous owner?''
'''Hold on, bro. Let me switch on my lap.'' Adney quickly opened the lap. He entered the number in a link and ran a suite. In less than two minutes, the address was displayed on the black screen. ''Ummm..strange..the previous owner is you, and the address is our home address. Do you use another number?''
''I will talk to you later, Adney.'' Devin hung up. That's it! As he guessed. He is the mysterious friend of Leena, which Devin is yet to digest.
Five years back, after the accident, Enger joined hands with Morvena and erased his memories. It was a win-win situation for both. So, it was Enger who had a deal with Morvena. Later Enger stole his mobile. He read the conversations. He pretended to be Leena's friend to become close to Leena. The theory fits perfectly. One thing that didnot sit with Devin was how he allowed these stupids to mess with his brain?
Little did Devin know, the theory he reasoned and assumed would soon prove him wrong and blow him with a nail-biting truth that happened years back.
