Upon hearing this, Han Yi put on a gentle smile. “It was risky, for sure. But this is the best way to find out if the car accident affected your mind after those tests and based on my understanding of your psychological endurance.”
“Professor, you are the greater mind!” Lu Jia’er said with a smile.
“I don’t have a greater mind. I just know you well enough! Besides, when it comes to diagnosis on psychological issues, nobody of all those students that I have taught can come close to you. Sometimes, I even consider myself inferior to you!” Professor Han Yi replied, smiling.
Lu Jia’er adopted a humble attitude. “Professor, you flatter me! I am relieved that we are sure I am okay!”
“Drive safely!” Professor Han said.
Lu Jia’er nodded, smiling. “If so, professor, I will excuse myself!”
Professor Han Yi called Lu Jia’er to stop as she was ready to leave. “Wait!”
“Anything else, professor?” Lu Jia’er asked.
Professor Han Yi paused for a moment and then threw Lu Jia’er a glance.
Judging by Professor Han Yi’s looks, Lu Jia’er already had an idea what the following topic would be. She took the initiative and started first, “Professor, are you going to talk about the cooperation between BUA and our department?”
Professor Han Yi smiled on hearing this. “Nobody can compare with you when it comes to the grasp on micro expressions! The leadership in our university and I have been looking forward to you being in charge of the project. However, if you insist that you are not willing to take this role, I will explain to the leaders. Even though the car accident was not serious, your health is the priority. You cannot afford to ignore it!”
Lu Jia’er felt a spread of warmth in her heart to hear that Professor Han Yi was worried about her health. “I may lack experience but I am willing to be in charge of the project. I appreciate that you and the leaders thinking so highly of me.”
He did not expect to hear this answer because several days ago, she was pretty determined and claimed that would be unequal to this role.
“Jia’er, health of paramount importance. I will talk to the leadership and ask BUA to give discretionary consideration!” Professor Han Yi replied.
Lu Jia’er smiled. “Professor, I am well. Since BUA appointed me to be in charge, they might disagree if we were to make changes!”
Now that Lu Jia’er had insisted so, Professor Han Yi could no longer refuse. After all, given that the research and development funds provided by BUA was of a large amount, it would be troublesome if something were to go wrong. It was true that B University’s Department of Psychology did have other corporate sponsors. Then again, with a better platform, it would be beneficial for the long-term development of the Department of Psychology in B University.
“I completely support you being in charge of the project. After the project in cooperation with BUA kicks off, your research will yield unusually brilliant results!” Professor Han Yi stated.
Gratefulness rose in the depth of Lu Jia’er’s eyes. She had lost count of the many favors Professor Han Yi granted her. She was his favorite student and he showed extra care for her. To many people, the extra care meant he had a bias toward her. She being in charge of the project in cooperation with BUA would make people talk again.
Lu Jia’er never minded even when people were speaking ill of her. The fact that she changed her decision was because of Jin Xiangdong. She was interested in his body and the things he told her. She was waiting for Ian to come back from his business trip to seek answers.
She found Jin Xiangdong a mystery as well! She was eager to find the answers!
Lu Jia’er was grateful to Professor Han Yi. “Thank you, Professor!”
“I didn’t do anything. What are you thanking me for?” Professor Han Yi smiled. “I do not know what the reason for this sudden change of mind is. Truth be told, a few days ago, when you turned down this offer, I wanted to talk some sense into you. How could you pass on such a good offer?”
Lu Jia’er smiled. “Of course I am not willing to let go of such a good opportunity. But, as a person not with enough experience, I had to put on a show and pretend to evade the responsibility! One step back today for two steps forward tomorrow, right?”
Professor Han Yi burst into laughter at this answer. “You may be able to fool others but I for one will not believe this statement!”
“Right, you don’t know how to pretend!” Professor Li Mei added.
It was nice to be trusted. Lu Jia’er smiled. “Ms. Li, people can change!”
“Yes, people can change. But you will not!” Professor Li Mei said with a smile.
Lu Jia’er looked at Li Mei. Her heart warmed. Lu Jia’er admired Li Mei’s tolerance, confidence and insight. Usually, when a lady saw her husband favoring a student so much, it would be inevitable that she would have wild thoughts. In reality, too many college professors took advantage of their identities and engaged in shady deals with their students.
Lu Jia’er once had a talk with Li Me about this and asked Li Mei if she would question her relationship with Professor Han Yi as student and teacher. Li Mei’s answer, surprisingly, was that she trusted Professor Han Yi to be a man of integrity. His students were young in age and there were many of them with good looks. That being said, Professor Li Mei was convinced that she was Professor Han Yi’s sole mate and nobody could replace her.
Professor Li Mei’s confidence was projected in her temperament, style of conversation, and knowledge. Other women would find ladies like this admirable and respectful. By the same logic, such ladies would attract male just as gentle and well-cultivated.
“She is right. People can change but you will not!” Professor Han Yi agreed with Professor Li Mei.
“Thank you. For so many years, you have been treating me like your own children. You have cared for me!” Lu Jia’er was grateful.
“Alas, if our Han Tao is one tenth of your excellence, I will be happy!” Professor Li Mei claimed.
“Ms. Li, you are not being fair to say this. Han Tao is already outstanding!” Lu Jia’er replied.
Li Mei smiled. “He is but he is still inferior to you!”
“Ms. Li, it is you that have great ambition for your children!” Lu Jia’er joked, “well, where is Han Tao?”
“He is out with friends. If he knew that you were coming, he would not have gone. Jia’er, stay for dinner. I will give Han Tao a call to get him back!” Li Mei said.
“It has been a long time since I have tasted your cooking. I miss it very much. Unfortunately, I have other things to attend to tonight. How unlucky of me!” Lu Jia’er replied.
“If you miss it so much, then stay. I will go and make dinner now!” Li Mei said.
“Next time. I have a session of psychological counseling at 8 tonight!” Lu Jia’er explained.
Li Mei knew that she could not force Lu Jia’er to stay. “If you have work to do, then come here for dinner after the school semester begins!”
“Sure!” Lu Jia’er promised.
Lu Jia’er stood up and Professor Han Yi stood up as well to see her out. On their way to the foyer, he asked, “Is it the Deputy Xu that is going to be at the psychological counseling?”
Lu Jia’er shook her head. “No!”
Han Yi smiled. “Do you have any plans to open a studio?”
Again, Lu Jia’er shook her head. “No!”
“Jia’er, if you can handle it, I suggest you start a studio. Given your abilities, in a few months, you will win a good reputation.” Han Yi said.
“Professor, how nice of you to say that. The two people consulting are both friends of mine. They trust me. I agreed because of some personal reasons.” Lu Jia’er explained.
At the foyer, Han Yi suddenly asked a bold question. “Jia’er, as a matter of fact, there is something that I don’t quite understand. You excel in your profession but at the same time, you seem to have an aversion of performing psychological counseling for others!”
Lu Jia’er denied this idea. “No, that is not it!”
Professor Han Yi smiled. “Okay, good. Different people have different aspirations. It is good that you favor academic research. After all, few souls can focus on academic prowess at the present day!”
“Professor, you and Ms. Li are my role models. I want to be someone like you!” Lu Jia’er said.
Professor Han Yi smiled. Lu Jia’er changed her shoes, pushed the door open and left.
Though she said again and again that they didn’t have to see her out, Professor Han Yi and his wife accompanied Lu Jia’er downstairs.
This trip had cleared out whether the car accident had affected Lu Jia’er’s mind. But she had to think twice about the things Professor Han Yi said before she left. Something seemed to be off. For the moment, she did not have an aversion of performing psychological counseling for others. It was just that she was too occupied to do that.
But why did Professor Han Yi say that? Upon closer thought, Lu Jia’er felt she seemed to have lost something for real.
At 8 that night, Lu Jia’er had sat herself in front of the computer. She started a video chat with Guo Yan and commenced the psychological counseling session.
Guo Yan told Lu Jia’er about the situation and her feelings during the past few days. Lu Jia’er took some notes and then she said, “The day before yesterday, you brought Qiqi to visit your mother-in-law. It implied that your mental state has changed to some extent. That is good!”
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was good. But I do feel less depressed recently when I went there. Even so, I still do not feel comfortable within!” Guo Yan replied.
“While you still feel uncomfortable, you have taken the initiative of stepping out and trying to better your relationship with your mother-in-law! You have done right and well!” Lu Jia’er gave her a compliment.
“Nothing much is better. It is just that we don’t argue or flush with anger when we meet any more!” Guo Yan answered.
On hearing this, Lu Jia’er said, “That is an improvement in your relationship. Previously, you and your mother-in-law were like two people pulling a rubber band at either end. You were both exerting great strength. But as soon as one of you loses your grip, you would hurt the other person completely. But now, you stopped pulling so hard. Not only had you protected yourself, you have lessened the potential harm by half, or even more!”
