Chapter 427 The Hardest of Them All
[SICARIO]
"That is not an answer, Captain Drew," Elodie said, and Drew could have sworn he felt chills down his spine at her tone.
Drew knew shit was about to go down, but he had to try and hold his own, he had a team that depended on him, though they seemed more doomed worth every second that the alpha's eyes glared into his soul.
Could she see through her soul? That was something that scared Drew to the core. He wasn't sure where this conversation was headed, but one thing he was sure of, was that it wouldn't favor him.
"Regular cargo, Alpha Elodie. Food that would keep us alive for the next nine months, along with the necessities for our survival. The ship didn't have much because it was meant to pick up your psycho of a foreigner alpha.
"Malika had commissioned it and demanded that we show up for the journey. We didn't have much of a choice. I told her that it would take us three months to get to the shore and she agreed to it, even though she demanded that we show up.
"We never had a choice—" Drew explained as he thought back to the first letter he had received from Malika.
That woman scared the living daylights out of him and he wouldn't dare try to mess up anything that the woman cared about. It was the kind of thing that Drew was never going to be ready for regardless of what happened along the way.
"So, you decided to come with an extra gift for us, right?" Elodie asked not letting go. She needed clearer answers and since Drew had come here in the morning, there weren't any better answers that she had received.
Initially, she would have accepted the answers and let everything be, but then with Mbali in the picture, Elodie needed to know if she had to brace Sicario for another war with Malika.
It wouldn't be an easy one, and it would go against everything they had all the world so hard for. But then if Elodie was being honest, she would have burned Sicario down if Mbali was her sister.
This was also why she needed to find the answers so that when Malka came, she would have something to give to the protector, something that would make sure that the Sicario they had rebuilt was safe for everyone and didn't have to think of war plans anymore.
War was never pretty, and just because they had gone through it more than once didn't mean they were ready to face it all one more time. It wouldn't be fair and that was something that they had to acknowledge.
"What the hell do you mean? I've been telling you the same thing since we came here and now you think this is some sort of a ploy? I never wanted to come back to Sicario. I never wanted to show my face here after everything that happened!
"You were the reason I chose to live on the watts, you were the reason I left everything and walked away. It was you, and because of you I missed everything that could have been important to me.
"I missed a lot, yet now you're here, trying to make a monster out of me because you couldn't figure out what the hell happened with the ship? I will have you know that it took me an ear to make that ship with my crew.
"After what your family did to me, I had to heal and I found them, my crew. Now I get that you have some fucked up friends but don't blame me for answering the white wolf's call, or her protector.
"You can do everything but that!" Drew said angrily as he looked at Elodie.
He couldn't believe that this was happening again.
Pacing around the room, Drew tried to think of what it was that could have Elodie Kane so angry with him that she would try to win every little thing on him. It didn't make sense and Drew knew it didn't have it, not when it came to the crazy misfits.
But still, a man could hope, right?
"You didn't answer my question, again, Captain Drew. But let's keep going. Did you know Mbali was dead in the cargo hold?" Elodie asked, trying to hold back her tears. She couldn't cry without getting an answer.
She couldn't be here like this and leave without any useful information that would help her understand how the hell an immortal was pinned down and Amia Russel wasn't here already, not to mention Malika Jabali. Stay updated through empire
It all was confusing as hell and Eldie wanted to know more. She had to.
"You're crazy, El… Mbali?" Drew ranted before his eyes softened at the mention of Jabali Lihle, the beautiful woman who had been nothing but kind to him.
She had made him feel like they were a team, try and not just a set of people that Malika had commandeered for the sake of the mission, Mbali had made Drew feel like sometimes being a sailor wasn't the worst thing, Mbali understood what it meant to be alone and what it meant to be away from society.
In the little time that she had Drew had talked, Drew had admired her intelligence and her ability to relate to people. It was almost impossible to imagine her as part of the deadliest team in the realm.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
She looked approachable and was hilarious to some point because everyone who had met Mbali always had a different first impression of her. But not Drew, maybe it was easy because he saw a broken Elodie in Mbali when they were out at sea.
Maybe that was why it was easy to relate to the girl because she reminded him of his past, one that he couldn't ever get over and one that would forever halt him no matter what he chose to do and how he did things.
"She's dead, Drew. Her body was retrieved after the ship exploded. So, I will ask again, why the fuck was Mbali on the ship if this was meant to be a ship for just your damn sailors?
"What happened out there and if you lie to me, I will have no other option left but to kill you. We both know how good I am at murdering people. So don't make me a killer on the same day I lost a friend, alright?" Elodie said as she walked over to the nearest seat.
She was already tired of standing there; her eyes had been welling with tears were still swollen, and the tears were holding their palace rightfully in her eyes something that got Drew amazed at how she did that.
It was somewhat impossible for someone to be that emotional and get sensible at the same time and yet the young Kane was doing it.
"You really have grown up, Ella," Drew said earnestly as he watched her keenly. She was the same yet different.
She is perfect and flawed, but that didn't matter because she was always, always going to be perfect to him. This war was testing them in so many ways but he knew that wasn't why he was here, so he would try to keep his focus.
"Why was my teammate on the ship?" Elodie asked again.
What do you think?
