Chapter 379 - Rewards
Aiden knew that it was bad and that there was a chance that someone from the Nightshade Family could be around, and that was something that he wanted to avoid at all costs.
"And who tried to assassinate that Reaper?"
Aiden talked about himself in the third period which was quite weird. However, he dismissed that thought instantly, there were many more important things to think about.
"Who? The Nightshades, obviously."
This time, Aiden was really panicking as sweat started to form on both his palms and his head.
"Hell, when the head protected him in front of everyone at the Inter Family Tournament, we officially became an enemy to that family. However, there's a rumor that all this fighting will cease as soon as the Reaper comes back from his trial."
Aiden's eyes widened as they were talking about him. Questions formed in his mind, he was really panicking this time.
'Don't tell me that a Nightshade is in that room?' Aiden thought, sweating like crazy.
"They tried to assassinate him where exactly?"
Aiden continued as many questions as he could since they all concerned him, even if it wasn't clear at the moment.
"Here, obviously."
Aiden was getting a little annoyed with their manner of speech, as they always tried to be smarter than him by adding that obviously at the end of every sentence. It was slowly starting to piss him off.
"They managed to enter this place?"
Aiden continued asking his questions without getting mad as he knew that it wouldn't amount to any result at the end of the day.
"Yes, we just told you. They tried to assassinate him here, in the territory of the Emberbane. Just where were you to miss all that information?"
The maids knew that he was part of the family, so they really wondered where he had left to have zero information about the current information.
They knew that there was a possibility that he had been in a trial, but the chances that he had been stuck there for a full month were so low that he didn't even matter.
However, when they heard Aiden's answer, they knew that they had been right all along.
"I was in a trial, obviously."
He made a little face to mock them after that. He had to admit that he enjoyed this moment, getting back at the two maids in front of him. They were beautiful, but was that really a reason to act this way with him?
No disrespect to maids, but they're just maids… right?
'Well Emily was also a maid, but she was a little bit different if I recall correctly,' Aiden thought as he remembered the first interaction that he had had with a maid.
It seemed that most maids were also people who had awakened.
"For one month? Just what the hell was that trial?" The two of them exclaimed loudly without any restrains.
Aiden looked at the door worriedly as he had no idea who was on the other side… was it just Melinda? Was she with someone else? Someone from the Nightshade Family?
There were so many questions without answers, and Aiden could only guess about those answers.
"What's taking her so long, do you two know?"
Aiden tried changing the subject as he didn't want to talk about the trial since it had been extremely special, and weird with all the interactions that he had gotten from the system.
The maids looked at one another as they clearly noticed his attempt at changing the subject, however, they didn't comment on it simply looking at the girls in front of him.
"No idea, we weren't around here earlier."
Aiden nodded as he started thinking as much as he could about who could be inside that room. He hoped that it wasn't someone who was related to the Nightshades since it would make things complicated.
Aiden closed his mouth and waited patiently, he was ready to put on his mask at any moment if the person on the other side of that door was a Nightshade. He didn't want the two maids right here to know his real identity which is why he wasn't putting it on his face at the moment.
Minutes passed by, and the door finally opened with Melinda coming out alone, clearly unhappy by the looks of it.
However, she regained some color on it when she saw the person who was sitting on the chair that was right in front of her.
"You're here?!" She exclaimed out of nowhere which completely shocked the two maids that were right beside him.
'Why is the head happy to see such a nobody?' The two maids thought at the same time.
It made no sense since they had seen how depressed she had been over the recent days. Everything that had been ongoing with the Nightshade had been affecting her a lot.
"Come in, come in!" She said instantly, before looking back toward the maids. "Thank you for bringing him here."
She seemed very excited to see Aiden after all this time since it would her daily life a lot better. The Nightshades had been pushing for that meeting, and Melinda was only for Aiden's return to officialize it.
Aiden swiftly entered the room, wondering what had happened in the recent days as it was clear that there had been a lot of changes because of everything that had happened with the Nightshades.
Right after Aiden entered, she slammed the door behind him and asked him to sit.
"So what was your trial like? One month, that's not a short time for a trial!" Melinda asked right away as she was very curious about everything that had happened in the world that he had visited.
Aiden hesitated over what he could say, and he decided not to reveal anything as he also had questions of his own.
"What about you guys? What happened around here?"
Aiden swiftly changed the subject and Melinda didn't even seem to notice it as she nodded, and started explaining everything.
"Right when you left, the Nightshades started sending assassin after assassin trying to kill you. Luckily or unluckily you weren't there when it happened, so you weren't at any risk."
She took a small break and looked at Aiden in the eyes.
"However, because you weren't there. I had to do something as the situation was getting out of hand extremely fast. And that's why I organized a little something… just don't react so strongly."
She waited to see Aiden nod and continued. She knew that he wouldn't be the most pleased with the arrangement that she had made. However, it was basically the only solution that she had come up with.
"You see, I arranged a little meeting between you and the Nightshades."

Right as she said that she noticed that Aiden was about to complain. However, she quickly managed to stop him as she continued talking.
"Not yet, don't talk yet. I'll explain to you how we will proceed."
Melinda didn't waste any time as she continued talking to him about the situation.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"You see, I promised Sylas Nightshade that we would have a small meeting between yourself and their family. As you probably know, he's really interested in you," she noticed that he seemed worried, so she added something else. "Don't worry about your security or identity, it will take place in the Emberbane Territory and we will make sure that nothing happens to you."
Aiden nodded but he knew that there were still a couple of problems attached to this meeting. If by some chance Sylas were to learn about his real identity then Aiden would be in big trouble.
"What if I don't want to do it?"
He looked into her eyes while saying that. He wanted to see the extent of the expressions that she would be making.
From Aiden's point of view, she didn't seem shocked whatsoever as she kept a straight face. However, he knew that her mind must be in turmoil right now.
Well, there was always another option which was that she had prepared something for this exact reaction. Nonetheless, Aiden didn't believe that was the case.
"You don't have a choice actually," she answered with a calm tone. "This is non-negociable."
Aiden looked at her right in the eyes and didn't say anything for a few seconds. He was thinking about an answer that could be seen as polite, however... he didn't manage to.
"You think you can force me?"
He was very arrogant when saying that. If their relationship was to develop like this Aiden would just leave and go back to Maelis's family, and he would make her rise to the very top of this world.
"Actually I can force you, and I will, if you don't accept to meet them."
Aiden was surprised by this answer, and it was clear that Melinda had changed a lot during his time away from her. She wasn't as nice as before, maybe because she thought that she could do everything.
"I don't think you can force me."
Aiden didn't care about what she was saying, but there was no way that he would let someone control him, he preferred leaving.
"If you force me to meet them, then I will leave this family. I literally don't care."
Aiden was plain serious as he pronounced those words. There was not the slightest hesitation in any of his words, and he made it known that he wouldn't let someone stronger than him control him.
"You will leave the family? Then, I'll expose your face for everyone to see. I'll say just this once Aiden, don't think for even one second that you have the upper hand in this conversation. You will do as I say, or else, you will be in big trouble."
