Chapter 233: Apology and Return [3]
****
In the warm interior of a lavish room, a figure was tiredly sitting on a sofa.
Her long wavy black hair cascaded down the backside of the sofa, however, they had completely lost their once shimmering black shine.
They were also messy as if the person hadn't combed them in long.
Not only the hair but her once beautiful large ox-brown eyes were now completely lifeless, devoid of any light or emotion.
It was as if they carried no purpose, just blankly staring out the window.
In the figure's lap, was a small girl of about 3 years old.
She was peacefully sleeping, her chest heaving up and down in intervals.
But just like the figure, there was a tense expression on the little girl's face.
And if one looked closely, they would see the tear marks on the child's face, indicating that she had been crying non stop not that long ago.
Katherine's whole life had been turned upside down in the past 3 days.
She didn't know what to make of it anymore.
Just like her lifeless eyes, her limp body conveyed no purpose as well.
She looked so dead that if one tried to kill her, there was a certain surety that she wouldn't resist at all.
And that was true.
What was there to live for Katherine anyway?
Her brother....
Katherine's stoic scrunched up into a painful expression and at the same time, emotions finally flashed through her eyes.
Sadness, regret and longing.
Tears started to flow from her eyes that she could barely control.
She knew that if the child below noticed that she was crying again then she would break into a sobbing downpour as well.
But...
What was she supposed to do if not cry?
Katherine continuously wiped her tears with her sleeves, seeing no end to them but trying to prevent any drop from landing on Lily below.
Ever since coming to the academy from day 1 with her little brother, Katherine never carried such big ambitions.
Being the future student council president was never her aim.
There was only one thing for her. One purpose in life.
And it was to keep her only friend, only confidant in this world.
The little boy of 12 with cute little black eyes and hair safe and happy.
Being lonely all her life and without any friends, Katherine never wanted to see the same pain being inflicted upon her little brother.
Not only that, but he was the only person she could talk to and be free to as well.
Katherine couldn't imagine what she would do if something happened to him.
No matter how much he was annoyed of her and acted coldly to her later on, Katherine's sisterly love for him never wavered.
And it never would.
He was the most precious being to her in the whole world. Her heart and life.
When suddenly, he changed and started acting warmly to her, a warm flame had been ignited in Katherine again.
She noticed it was off but who was she to care for?
As long as her only little brother was with her and safe, she didn't care about it.
To see him rising like her and being proud like her, it warmed Katherine's heart.
Especially when he spent time with her and cooked for her, despite being exhausted.
Just like she cared for him, he cared for her as well.
And that was the only thing that the elder sister ever wanted in the world. For the two siblings to be able to live in peace.
But of course, fate wasn't so kind as to spare them.
In a flash, her little brother had been taken from her.
Grabbed from her without any preparation, taking the only source of light in her life away from her.
Katherine coughed hard, resting Lily's sleeping form on the sofa as she retreated to her room. Coming in, she quickly took out pills and swallowed them, trying to calm her raging mind. There were dark circles under her eyes as well, indicating that she hadn't slept a wink as well. And how could she?
Walking over to her drawer, Katherine opened it amidst her tears.
A small square-shaped box entered her vision.
Grabbing it with shaking hands, she took out a white thin object from it.
And brought it to her lips.
A cigarette.
Scrambling around for a lighter, she stumbled, grabbed it from another drawer and lit her
cigarette.
As it lit up, Katherine wasted no time, taking a long drag from her cigarette.
Smoking.
It was an act that she used to do 3 years ago.
It was an addiction to her. A habit to escape from the world's expectations and burdens on her.
But then, she stopped.
Why?
It was also because of Amon, the little boy who meant the world to her.
Just one wish from him for her to stop was enough to convince Katherine as she took it away
from her sight, only to never see it again.
It was hard. Hard to break away from it.
Smoking was like the fuel for her body to run.
But even then, she bore through the burning pain of her body as it starved for the cigarettes,
remembering her brother at every moment.
For him, was the only thought she had at that time.
And then, it finally stopped.
But now...
Katherine didn't know what to do again.
She had no one left for her to talk to in this world anymore.
Her brother, unable to be found.
Amelia, disappeared as well, not answering any calls or texts of Katherine.
Alice, back at her manor with Elizabeth after the incident.
These 3 were the only people that Katherine ever knew, ever was able to talk to freely.
And now, all of them had disappeared, leaving her alone.
A hollow laugh escaped from Katherine's lips as she took another drag of her cigarette.
To think about it, did Katherine even have any friends that stuck around?
In her whole life, every friend that she made, which were already few, had been taken away
from her in one way or another.
And now, it was the same thing happening all over again.
A hollow scoffing sound escaped Katherine's lips.
How pitiful.
Her form collapsed on the ground weakly, without any strength in it.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
She was really a curse.
A curse meant to rot away and die without any person by her side at the end.
With no friends and no light.
This was who Katherine was.
And why wouldn't she?
For all what she had done years back, this seemed like a fitting revenge for her sins.
She deserved it.
