CH.547 Deck Master Tournament, part 2
CH.547 Deck Master Tournament, part 2
Other than Elias, Mariina, Cardo, Indigo, Maris, Maiko, Damian (one of the students from the magic academies) and Mikolaj (from the Kitchen Knights) got to the second round.
For the quarter finals, Mariina was against Elias. Which could have been enough of a match, but I won’t cover it because of Elias. He made a one sided bet with Mariina where if he wins, Mariina will marry him.
… Yeah. I didn’t approve of the bet and almost kicked out Elias for even making it, but Mariina didn’t want that, and proceeded to FTK and then OTK Elias with her Power Bond Ultimate Golem, tribute for burn strategy. The only reason she didn’t FTK Elias twice is because Elias chose to go first in the second duel.
Don’t ask me with what luck she keeps pulling her FTK combo. I know people taking part in my tournaments have anime luck. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.
Then again, so did I when I dueled Elias in the last tournament, so what can I say?
Cardo went against Indigo, and Indigo ended up winning that one. By the way, Cardo was running a Light focused deck with Honest as his deck master.
Maris, with her Jinzo Dinosaur deck, went against Maiko, who is running Fortune Ladies. Maiko ended up winning that one.
And the last quarter final was Damian against Mikolaj. Damian had a HERO deck with Stratos, while Mikolaj ran Dragons with Blue-Eyes. And unlike what happened in the GX anime, when Jaden dueled Kaibaman, E-Heroes won, and Damian made it to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the matchups were Mariina vs. Indigo and Damian vs. Maiko.
And since we are at the semi-finals, I think I’ll actually cover the duels.
Starting off was a match I hoped didn’t go like Mariina’s other matches, Mariina vs. Indigo.
Ancient Gears vs. Gladiator Beasts.
As a quick reminder of both of their deck masters, Mariina has Ancient Gear Cannon. With it she can, once per turn, during her turn, tribute one monster you control to inflict damage to your opponent equal to the on the field attack of the tributed monster. Also for the rest of the turn, her opponent cannot activate Spells or Traps.
Meanwhile Indigo has Test Tiger.
It not only makes it so that Glad Beasts don’t have to return to the deck or extra deck when their condition procs, but they can be returned to the deck whenever you want, and it is treated as them being returned by their own effect. Except during the battle phase. I had to add that limit after testing the deck myself, because otherwise one battle phase with a clear board would automatically win you the duel.
But let’s get into the duel.
It began with Indigo going first. She opened with Gladiator Beast's Respite. She returned Gladiator Beast Alexander and Gladiator Beast Octavius to her deck and drew three cards.
She then activated Colosseum - Cage of the Gladiator Beasts. And after activating Gladiator Proving Ground, searching for Gladiator Beast Laquari, she summoned Laquari.
She then set two cards and ended her turn.
Then it was Mariina’s turn, and she looked quite happy. Probably because she had her FTK/OTK combo in hand.
She started off with Machine Factory, which is a new card I made for this tournament. It just searches for a LV.4 or lower Machine-type monster. She got an Ancient Gear Knight with it.
She then used Power Bond to fuse together Ancient Gear Golem, Ancient Gear Knight and Ancient Gear to fusion summon Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem, with its attack doubled.
But, before she could use her deck master’s ability, Indigo responded with her own deck master’s ability. With Test Tiger, she returned Gladiator Beast Laquari to her deck. And since Test Tiger’s return effect is treated as being returned by the effect of the Glad Beast monster, she was then able to summon a different Glad Beast from the deck, and she summoned Gladiator Beast Murmillo.
Which both gave a counter to Colosseum - Cage of the Gladiator Beasts and triggered the effect of Murmillo. When summoned by the effect of a Glad Beast, Murmillo allows you to target one monster on the field and destroy it. So Indigo used the effect to destroy Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem.
This naturally triggered the effect of Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem to summon back the regular Ancient Gear Golem.
But Indigo also used one of her set traps, Gladiator Lash. Since she special summoned a Glad Beast, Mariina has to discard a card. She discarded Ancient Gear Castle.
Mariina was about to move to her battle phase, but before she could, Indigo used Test Tiger multiple times, returning Glad Beasts to the deck and summoning new ones in their places. This built up counters on her Field Spell, until she had 6 of them and she summoned Gladiator Beast Octavius.
And since her Field Spell has 6 counters, Octavius has 3100 attack, which is more than the Gear Golem, so Mariina didn’t bother to battle. She set her last card and ended her turn.
But, during her end phase, she took 4400 damage because of Power Bond.
Duel 1, turn 2 end.
Hand: 3 | LP: 8000 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger |
6 counters |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 0 | LP: 3600 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
Indigo’s turn, and after drawing a card, she used her deck master to return Octavius to the deck, and special summoned Gladiator Beast Bestiari. Bestiari’s effect activated, and Indigo destroyed Mariina’s set Overwhelm.
Indigo then normal summoned Gladiator Beast Retiari, before fusing it and Bestiari to summon Gladiator Beast Gyzarus.
Gyzarus’ effect destroyed Mariina’s Ancient Gear Golem.
Indigo then returned her Fusion monster to the extra deck with Test Tiger, summoning Laquari and Octavius from the deck. Because of the 9 counters on her Field Spell, and Laquari’s effect, Laquari had 3000 attack and Octavius had 3400
Indigo moved to her battle phase and Mariina had no monsters on the field, her attacks were direct attacks.
Indigo attacked with her 2 monsters and won the duel.
Duel 1, turn 3, duel end
Hand: 3 | LP: 8000 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger |
9 counters |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 0 | LP: 0 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
The second duel began and Mariina was going first.
She began by activating Geartown. By the way, it is worth mentioning that this tournament runs on the more modern Field Spell rules, so both players can have one active, and if you activate another Field Spell, the previous one is not treated as having been destroyed. So Mariina can’t just flood the field with Gadjiltron Dragons by activating three copies of Geartown.
She then normal summoned Ancient Gear Beast, which she can do without a tribute thanks to Geartown, set a card and ended her turn.
Indigo’s turn, and after drawing a card, she summoned Gladiator Beast Equeste.
To which Mariina responded by activating her set Master Seal. It is a custom trap I made for the tournament, which negates the effects of your opponent’s deck master until the end of the second end phase after this card was activated. So until Mariina’s next end phase, Indigo can’t use her Test Tiger deck master.
By the way, you can banish Master Seal from your GY, during your turn only, to negate the effects of a deck master (in the deck master zone) for the turn.
And since Equeste is weaker than Ancient Gear Beast, Indigo couldn’t attack. Instead, she equipped her Equeste with Gladiator Beast's Battle Manica, so it cannot be destroyed by battle. She then set two cards and ended her turn.
Duel 2, turn 2 end.
Hand: 2 | LP: 8000 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger | |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 2 | LP: 8000 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
Mariina’s turn, and after drawing a card, she activated Double Cyclone, destroying both her own Geartown and Unika’s Gladiator Beast's Battle Manica.
This triggered Geartown, so Mariina special summoned Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon from her deck.
She then normal summoned Ancient Gear Knight from her hand.
Mariina moved to her battle phase, using Ancient Gear Beast to attack Gladiator Beast Equeste. Because of Ancient Gear Beast, Indigo couldn’t do anything, so her monster was destroyed and she took 400 damage.
Mariina then attack directly with both Ancient Gear Knight and Gadjiltron Dragon, inflicting 4800 damage, leaving Indigo with just 2800.
Which is low enough for Mariina to attempt to go for game with her Deck Master’s ability, but Indigo used her own Master Seal in response, negating the effect.
Mariina then activated Ancient Gear Explosive from her hand, tributing Gadjiltron Dragon, inflicting 1500 damage to Indigo, before ending her turn.
Indigo’s turn and she drew a card. And Mariina’s Master Seal is now over, so Test Tiger can once again use its effect.
She started with Terraforming, searching for her Field Spell, and activated it.
She then summoned Gladiator Beast Dimacari, but immediately returned it to the deck with Test Tiger to summon Gladiator Beast Murmillo.
Murmillo’s effect destroyed Mariina’s Ancient Gear Beast, and then Indigo returned that to the deck to special summon Gladiator Beast Darius. Which she used to summon back her Equeste from the GY.
She then fused together her two Glad Beasts to summon Gladiator Beast Essedarii.
Note: Tournament version of Essedarii has the effect ‘At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card attacked or was attacked, you can return it to the Extra Deck to Special Summon 2 "Gladiator Beast" monsters from your Deck. And yes, Test Tiger deck master can be used to trigger that effect.
And thanks to the two counters on her Field Spell, Essedarii gained 200 more attack. It attacked over Mariina’s Ancient Gear Knight, inflicting 900 damage.
Indigo ended her turn.
Duel 2, End of turn 4
Hand: 1 | LP: 1300 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger | 2 counters |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 0 | LP: 7100 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
Mariina’s turn, and she drew a card. And as soon as she did, Indigo used Test Tiger to return Essedarii to the extra deck, and summoned Laquari and Retiari from her deck. Retiari banished a card from Mariina’s GY, specifically Gadjiltron Dragon.
She then used her set Gladiator Lash to force Mariina to discard the card she just drew, which was an Ancient Gear Soldier, so had Mariina had the chance to summon it, and tribute it for her Deck Master, she would have won.
But with no cards in hand, and her deck master being too weak to fight Indigo’s Glad Beasts, Mariina ended her turn.
Indigo’s turn, and after drawing a card, she activated Gladiator Proving Ground, searched for Gladiator Beast Darius and summoned it.
She attacked directly with all of them, inflicting 6200 damage before ending her turn.
Duel 2, End of turn 6
Hand: 1 | LP: 1300 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger | 4 counters |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 0 | LP: 900 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
Mariina’s turn, and she drew a card. She looked a bit dejected, set the card and ended her turn. But before the end of her main phase, Indigo used Test Tiger to return Retiari to the deck, summoning out Gladiator Beast Octavius, which then destroyed Mariina’s set Power Bond.
Mariina ended her turn.
Indigo’s turn, and after drawing her card, she went staring into her battle phase and attacked directly with Laquari, winning the duel.
Duel 2, Turn 8, End of the duel
Hand: 2 | LP: 1300 | Indigo | Deck Master: Test Tiger | 5 counters |
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Hand: 0 | LP: 0 | Mariina | Deck Master: Ancient Gear Cannon |
And with that, Mariina’s FTK journey through the tournament was over. I think it might have just been the matchup. Or maybe I made Test Tiger too OP. But then again, almost no one used Glad Beasts. Out of all of the people who signed up, only Indigo and one other person used them. So maybe people just didn’t realize how powerful they can be.
