Chapter 1351 The World Must Repay Us
Meanwhile, during the exact same night across the seas.
Inside a skyscraper at the heart of a bustling city, one of the bastions of the Human race, the meeting room was being filled, suddenly. A massive fat middle-aged man—sitting at the main chair was surprised when people rushed into the room.
He was the Grand Duke of the Elpida Alliance, Azura Langston.
Every single president of the United World Organization across the world answered to him.
And he was also a Dual Elemental Awakened, Life and Time elements.
Gazing at the people rushing into the meeting room calmly, Azura recognized their faces.
All of them were people who worked for him in this office, high-ranking officials too, it wasn't normal for them to directly come to him like this. Azura stood up and looked at them sharply, this sudden ambush greatly displeased him.
"Have you all no manners?" He asked calmly, his eyes glowing.
Outside of the room was his secretary.
If they wished to speak with him, they should've informed his secretary, not ambush him.
But his displeasure soon vanished noticing that their faces showed signs of an emergency.
Something must've happened.
"Forgive us for the unsightly manner," the CEO of the office, Alya said, panting in between. "I received grave news from the frontline two minutes ago. Our city... the city of Veilsphire was ambushed and destroyed"
"What?!" Azura couldn't stay composed anymore, his eyes bulged. "Are you serious?"
Veilsphire City stood as one of the continent's key strongholds, a heavily fortified military city guarded, by both Awakened, and armed forces. Over seven million fighting men—and women were stationed there with about a quarter million Awakened among that number.
It was a strategic city with immense geographical importance.
Other than the city hosting about 40% of Aether Venom reserves, it was also a shield.
Located at the border with the Angel's land, it was a shield for the cities behind it.
Having it fall has catastrophic means and all of that played in Azura's mind at this moment.
"Yes, I verified the information" Alya nodded regretfully. .
Upon hearing this, Azura fell back to his chair once again, completely shocked by the news.
"Our vanguard, moved to Olynar City to be closer to the seas, since the Angels were heading to President Sebrof's continent," She continued, giving the bad news in full. "Out of the three commanders in Veilsphire City, two moved to other locations to tackle Order Beasts"
"Who stayed behind?" Azura asked, his hands gripped the armrests of his chair.
He was tensed, not knowing which commander died in battle.
Inside, he favored one commander, hoping that he wasn't the one who died.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
However, from Alya's depressed expression alone, Azura already knew the answer.
"It's Commander Conan, sir..." She whispered with a shaky voice. "We lost contact with him"
Losing the city was already bad enough but losing Conan devastated Azura.
Conan was one of the strongest Awakened under the Elpida Alliance, he has an affinity to an element only—but that element, was the Life Element. Back when he reached the ninth-rank realm, he unlocked the ability to resurrect people.
He was also immortal, the only thing that could hurt him was using resurrection too much.
Recently, he was able to reach the Pseudo-Tenth rank realm.
Coupled with his High Spirit, he could do mass resurrection at the cost of a nosebleed.
To say that he was strong was an understatement.
"If Conan was there, how did the city fall? How can the Angels breach it?" Azura asked.
Despite the strength of the Angels, Humanity is not a force to be scoffed at.
Even if five Dark Archangels came to attack, Conan wouldn't lose.
But that question led to the most grave news that Alya brought with her to this room.
Seeing her expression, Azura made a guess, "Is it the Archangel of Knives...?"
"Even if all Archangels attacked, Conan would survive. He must still be alive" He added.
For a moment there, Azura allowed himself to be hopeful.
A misunderstanding could still happened at this high position—the city was really destroyed, he didn't doubt that, but Conan's death? That was impossible. Even the Elpida Alliance could not think of a way to kill Conan with certainty.
Moreover, Alya said that they lost contact, so Conan has a chance to still be alive. Explore more adventures at empire
"No—Orion, the Archangel of Retribution was there," Alya replied hauntingly—before her fists tightened. "and Void... He was spotted in the sky by the citizen of Veilsphire, and he was also the one who broke the city's barrier"
Upon hearing this, Azura now realized the worst of the worst had come to light.
He was devastated, leaning back to look at the ceiling of the office with hollow eyes.
Being the one who commanded the forces of the Elpida Alliance—to fight against the Angels, Azura, had been consistently playing his chess pieces right. One that he paid attention to the most was Conan's meeting with Void.
It was a scenario that he wanted to avoid the most.
Despite achieving the tenth-rank realm already—Void has a range of his activity.
Beyond this range, he wouldn't meddle, no matter how severe the situation was.
On one side, it was a good thing that Void didn't participate in major fights, as that would be complete despair—but on the other, Humanity, couldn't regain lost ground. Every single loss was a punch to the gut because of that.
The Elpida Alliance itself doesn't have the tools to Conan properly.
But the Angels, Void to be exact, was an exception.
From his few appearances in the flesh, Humanity noted an artifact that he wielded.
An artifact that brought terror and despair.
"Void used his Black Scroll of Scalith to break through—our a hundred and fifty combinations of formation, and sent his Dark Angels to massacre the city," Alya said, she was emotional as she said this. "And because of that, we assumed Commander Conan was dead"
Azura chuckled in desperation, his face twisted with helplessness beyond measure.
"So his range grew... I should've known" He muttered, laughing to himself.
It was only the sound of his laughter—filling the meeting room for a good minute, the others were silent, as they knew the situation was extremely dire, and Azura was the one who bore the weight of this failure.
Knowing his past, the people inside felt pain for Azura inside.
Once Azura stopped, he finally opened his mouth, "Send the bombs, I want to see if it works"
"Bombs? Void would anticipate our missiles," Alya refuted, it wouldn't work.
However, Azura's eyes sharpened as he gazed at her, "I'm not talking about those bombs"
Realizing what he was meaning to say, Alya gulped harshly.
It took only a moment for her to recover and firm her expression back to normal.
Considering the situation, they would need extreme methods, no matter how immoral it was.
"I understand, I'll send the message right away"
...
Meanwhile, Veilsphire City.
A man coughed a couple of times from the dust infiltrating his lungs.
He had already opened his eyes but all he saw was darkness.
Naturally—the man tried blinking multiple times to see if his eyes were really open—and they were. He tried moving his body, but he couldn't. Not that his body was unresponsive, he was still able to feel, but it seemed he was stuck somewhere.
Once his senses came back fully, he felt pain across his entire body.
Involuntarily, his muscles twitched and trembled.
Moving his head, he felt a brush of fresh air blowing at him from above.
He tried looking up and found a hole there and there was light coming from it, an exit.
Just then, however, his eyes widened recalling his family.
"Kayla...!" He called his wife, no answer. "Dexter...!" He called his son, no answer.
His voice echoed but there was no answer.
Despite the pain, the man wiggled his body upwards, pushing himself to reach the exit.
It took a substantial effort to reach the exit, his body moved solely from adrenaline, his family was the only thing on his mind. Pushing himself outside, he was greeted by the night sky, the moon was glowing brightly above.
Once his arms were free, he pushed himself out and realized that he was buried in rubble.
Luck was the one who saved his life from being squashed to death.
Upon standing up, his uniform was exposed.
He was a major in the military and since he was deployed here, his family came with him.
But that was the wrong choice, he now regretted that decision he made months ago.
Despite wanting to find his family the most—once he scanned his surroundings, he could not help but feel a chill running down his spine. His blood runs cold, the city that he remembered was no more.
For miles and miles long, the man could only see the shattered remnant of his city.
Each and every single buildings and infrastructures were destroyed.
Dark smoke rose in plumes across the city—the air was an acrid smell of flesh and blood.
Ash swirls in the air, coating every surface with a layer of soot and despair.
His eyes could see the remains of the city but his mind couldn't process.
It felt like a nightmare and all he needed to do was wake up to get away from this madness.
Just then, he heard the sound of flaps coming from above.
Dark Angels, equipped with crimson wings flew above the city, their eyes scanned for all the survivors. In reflex, the man crouched and hid—but as he did that, his eyes caught sight of a crowd half a mile from him.
Standing amidst the crowd with a broken spirit was a man.
His torn technologically advanced white combat suit made his identity obvious.
Commander Conan, the man has never seen the commander wounded in his entire life.
But at this moment, the commander was struggling to stand.
Descending from the sky and landing in front of Conan was an Angel.
Behind him were eight red wings, shaded with an unnatural color of purple, unique to himself.
It was Void.
Void glanced over to the Awakened around Conan with a cold, calculating gaze.
Traces of life energy could be sensed inside of them, resurrected Awakened by Life Mana.
Despite knowing their fate, the Awakened drew their weapons to cast their spells but in that instant, their bodies exploded—splattering blood, everywhere. Void killed them with only his sharp gaze.
He then approached Conan with authority, his back upright imposingly.
"So much for beings called Angels," Conan muttered, smirking defiantly. "you're a fraud"
"A fraud...?"
"I've read the scriptures of the old, Angels are said to be saviors. Look at you now"
Upon hearing this, Void nodded—he didn't seem to be angry.
On the contrary, his face was understanding.
Heeding not Conan's words, Void drew a black ancient scroll.
It floated in front of him and rolled open with a wave of his hand, stretching wide—exposing its content written in a spectacular gold color. Void activated the scroll, causing the writings to glow brightly.
As he was activating the scroll, Conan watched from the side.
In hindsight, he could attack Void from behind but that was nothing but false hope.
"Stop this—return to your old ways," Conan swayed. "the Angel race deserve way more than following your selfish desire"
Once Void heard this, he lowered his arms and stood motionlessly.
"Do you know how many battles I've reinforced?" He suddenly said, his voice deep and filled with hidden, ancient emotions. Void turned his head to the side, and continued on, his voice becoming more—and more stern, with each word. "How many lives I've rescued? How many kings and queens I've spared? How many races, I've saved?"
Upon hearing this, Conan frowned, he could see the bottomless pain behind Void's eyes.
Pain from countless battles and sufferings he endured.
Pivoting around, Void faced Conan, "Do you have any idea how many Angels I sacrificed?"
Void bombarded Conan with questions.
Hearing no answer, he tilted his head, the corner of his lips curled upward a little.
It was almost as if he was shooting a teasing smile at the oblivious Conan.
"Do not speak what you do not understand—I've lived a thousand times more lives than you," He said and focused back to the black scroll again. "I have compromised, obeyed, listened to the great light, and look at us Angels now... a remnant of what we once were. This is not born out of selfish reasons, this is a decision I've pondered for thousands of years"
"Angels have given the world everything and now... the world must repay us with everything"
